Job Description:

C2ES seeks a highly qualified and committed individual to fill the position of Climate and Trade Fellow or Senior Fellow (depending on relevant experience) to advance our work on U.S. climate and trade policies and actions that will be critical to achieving a net-zero economy. This position provides an exciting opportunity to join a team committed to effective and ambitious climate action, and will focus on assessing trade policies and developing policy approaches that can help decarbonize industrial emissions and spur greater climate ambition, while supporting growing stakeholder engagement efforts at C2ES. The Climate and Trade Fellow or Senior Fellow will report to the Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach.

Requirements:

Major responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach to develop and help to lead a new programmatic area at C2ES, focused on the intersection of U.S. climate and trade policies;
  • Work with policy makers and leading companies, including those on C2ESs Business Environmental Leadership Council, to identify high-impact climate and trade policies;
  • Support advocacy efforts to enact climate and trade policy priorities;
  • Monitor, track, and report on climate and trade developments including both domestic and international actions, collaborating with C2ESs International Strategies team as appropriate;
  • Contribute to C2ESs position as a thought leader on climate-smart trade policies;
  • Conduct research and analysis, and contribute to written material, at the intersection of climate and trade policies, including analyses, thought pieces, policy briefs, and reports, with supervision provided by C2ES experts;
  • Represent C2ES at relevant events in Washington by other think tanks, advocacy groups, Congress and federal agencies;
  • Support and help conduct briefings with C2ES business partners on U.S. climate and trade related policies and issues.

  • Participate in monthly all-staff meetings led by the staff Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council (JEDI-C), which provide an opportunity to interact and learn about various DEI-related topics.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Complete company training assigned during onboarding and on a yearly basis, including specialized training as relevant for management positions.

Additional duties for the Senior Fellow include:

  • Serve as an expert advisor for C2ES on climate and trade policies;
  • Help develop a research agenda and undertake original research and analysis, and serve as lead author on written material, at the intersection of climate and trade policies, including analyses, thought pieces, policy briefs, and reports, with broad guidance provided by C2ES experts;
  • Leverage existing network and grow relationships with counterparts at companies, NGOs, research institutions, as well as in government, including relevant congressional offices and federal agencies;
  • Organize workshops, briefings and other events engaging policy makers, experts, companies and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field (e.g., economics, environmental or energy policy, environmental studies, political science) at least 4 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy OR a Masters degree in a related field with at least 2 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy;
  • Top-notch writing, editing, research, and analytic skills;
  • Interdisciplinary understanding of climate change (e.g., economics, markets, technology, politics, etc.);
  • Ability to sort through dense and complicated information quickly;
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Willingness to learn and to pitch in at all levels;
  • Commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in advancing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental/climate justice.

Additional qualification for the Senior Fellow include:

  • Masters degree in a related field with at least 5 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy, OR a Ph.D. in a related field, OR a Bachelors degree in a related field with a minimum of 8 years of direct experience in trade and climate and energy;

Desired Qualifications:

  • Substantive experience with U.S. climate and energy policies;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of climate and trade policies and agreements at the federal and international levels (e.g., EU carbon border adjustment mechanism, U.S. border carbon adjustment proposals, G7 Climate Club, etc.);
  • Demonstrated familiarity, either through courses or work experience, with international trade theory and monetary theory;
  • Demonstrated experience synthesizing and communicating U.S. domestic policy developments to general audiences;
  • Prior experience with climate policy engagement, including working with coalitions, trade associations, or similar collaborative efforts involving diverse stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among and efficiently manage multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed.

Additional desired qualifications for the Senior Fellow include:

  • Extensive knowledge of climate and trade policies and agreements at the federal and international levels;
  • Prior experience synthesizing and communicating U.S. domestic policy developments to public audiences;
  • Successful track record with climate policy engagement, including working with coalitions, trade associations, or similar collaborative efforts involving diverse stakeholders;
  • Ability to work independently in line with agreed upon program strategy;
  • Successful track record in highly collaborative, team-based environments, with a commitment to professional development and mentoring;
  • Experience supervising direct reports and/or external contractors/consultants;

Starting Salary Base: Depending on experience and qualifications, the salary range for a Fellow is $76,000 – $95,000 and for a Senior Fellow is $95,000-$119,000.

Status: Full-time, benefits eligible

Reporting to: Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach

Travel and Location: C2ES operates a hybrid work environment from our office in downtown Washington, DC. Preference will be given to applicants in (or willing to move to) the Washington, DC metro area, with physical presence expected in the office at least 3 days per week. We will, however, also consider remote applicants for this position.
