CalSTRS is Hiring! Are you ready to take your career to the next level?

The Investment Officer II position is eligible for incentive compensation and has a maximum incentive opportunity of 10% of base salary.

The CalSTRS Investments Branch is seeking an experienced individual to work as an Investment Officer II on the Sustainable Investments & Stewardship Strategies (SISS) team.

The Sustainable Investment & Stewardship Strategies (SISS) unit was initially established in 1978 to protect assets through good governance and operational accountability. Today the unit focuses on three primary strategies: managing a portfolio of sustainability-themed investments across public and private markets that are additive to the Total Fund; leading CalSTRS stewardship activities focused on corporate engagement and proxy voting; and supporting strategic relationships with CalSTRS members and partners. The SISS unit also leads multiple efforts across the Investments Branch, including the Net Zero Portfolio Emissions Strategy, which includes reducing financed emissions, increasing investment in low-carbon solutions, and using CalSTRS influence to accelerate the transition to a net zero global economy.

Under the general direction of the Associate Portfolio Manager, the Investment Officer (IO) II provides investment and portfolio management support for the Sustainable Investment & Stewardship Strategies (SISS) Portfolio. The SISS Portfolio is an opportunistic multi-asset class portfolio with a global remit. The IO II will support senior team members in the diligence, structuring, and execution of investments with a primary focus on sustainability-focused investments, including those that support the energy transition, consistent with the SISS portfolio strategy. This position will also provide support on portfolio operations, including portfolio analytics and reporting. The IO II is responsible for performing a wide range of complex duties requiring a high degree of independence, confidentiality, and discretionary judgment.

  • Experience with private investments (real assets, credit, private equity, and/or venture capital)
  • Demonstrated passion for social impact and sustainable investing
  • Experience conducting due diligence of potential investments
  • Experience preparing memoranda and presentations
  • Experience with portfolio analytics and financial modeling
  • Experience with investment operations
  • Ability to research and analyze complex issues
  • Ability to present information clearly, both orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to work independently, exercising a high degree of initiative, independence, and discretionary judgment
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and effectively prioritize workload to ensure all deadlines are met and re-direct job focus when needed
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Collaborative team player with a strong work ethic, high integrity, and desire to learn

Duties will be adjusted at the Investment Officer I level.

An incumbent who possesses a professional certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.

Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
