Job Description

Are you a subject matter expert on building performance standards, building energy benchmarking, and energy audits? California Energy Commission (CEC) is hiring an Existing Building Performance Standards & Decarbonization Lead. This Electric Generation System Program Specialist I (EGSPS I) state classification/position is within the Existing Buildings Branch (EBB) of our Efficiency Division and provides an exciting opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in existing buildings through decarbonization and energy efficiency through programs, policies, standards, and analysis.

Our next EGSPS I will work with management and staff aligning and integrating activities with other relevant state and federal programs and policies, such as demand response, renewable energy integration, financing and incentives, integrated resource planning, resource performance evaluation, electricity grid and energy resiliency, retail electricity rates, and energy equity. The EGSPS I will conduct complex analysis and develop and defend strategies to transition the energy and emissions performance of California’s existing buildings to meet the state’s clean energy goals.

** Telework option is available, but hired candidate must reside in California before starting.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of existing building performance standards, benchmarking as well as policy and strategy development.
  • Knowledge of state energy and climate goals, building decarbonization technologies and strategies, energy efficiency, and distributed generation and storage.
  • Effectively leading technical projects and working in a team environment.
  • Experience working with models of energy use and energy intensity of buildings.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions accounting and quantifying emissions reductions.
  • Performing energy calculations and conducting quantitative/qualitative analyses.
  • Experience writing and defending analyses, reports and recommendations with decision makers and stakeholders.
  • Experience with state and federal funding programs supporting climate change and clean energy efforts.
  • Background supporting or advancing state programs or policies.
