Under the direction of the Supervisor of the Grid Innovation Unit, the Associate Electrical Engineer (AEE) leads or supports interdisciplinary and/or interdivisional teams to plan and implement the California Energy Commissions (CEC) research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) programs. The AEE conducts difficult electrical engineering work, technical analyses and project management functions in the planning, development, and implementation of the advancement of research in areas including but not limited to grid resiliency, grid reliability, grid modernization, power quality, and distributed renewable integration. The AEE serves as a more knowledgeable resource and performs and participates in a wide variety of assignments, including engineering assessments, solicitation development and management, project management, and market and technology transfer. The AEE mentors junior staff and may serve as a project lead for other technical and analytical staff.
The Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $300 million annually to advance technology innovation and research supporting the states clean energy and climate goals, including in the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management. The Energy Systems & Transportation Branch (ESTB) enables a clean and reliable energy system through new energy storage technologies and technologies to integrate distributed energy resources (e.g., onsite energy storage, clean distributed generation, and electric vehicle technologies) into the grid and the advancement of methods, tools, and technologies to support gas and electricity infrastructure decarbonization, modernization, safety, and integrity. The Grid Innovation Unit incorporates advanced energy systems to support a modern electric grid, targeting 100% zero-carbon resources and enabling grid resiliency and flexibility.

Working Conditions
The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location.
