Field Service Technician Microgrids

About the role: The Field Service Technician specializes in Microgrids and plays a crucial role in the assembly, installation, integration, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of microgrid systems. BoxPower is seeking a candidate who will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of microgrid installations, contributing to the advancement of clean and efficient energy solutions.
This role reports to the Field Service Manager. This role has no direct reports. The salary range for this role is $80,000-$90,000 depending on experience and extended responsibilities. This role can only be performed locally at BoxPower HQ in Grass Valley, CA. Travel is required for this role with a service range covering California while expanding to cover the US.
Responsibilities:
- Installation and Commissioning:
- Execute the installation and commissioning of microgrid components, including DERs, solar panels, energy storage systems, generators, balance of plant, and control hardware.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and project specifications during installation processes.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot system communication networks
- Install, configure, and test control systems including fire detection, security, automation, and system operations
- Program and test major and minor equipment, including breakers, Inverters, Charge Controllers, generators and transfer switches, protective relays and metering, plcs, RTAC, industrial computers, etc.
- Perform quality assurance on the product, documenting and implementing changes and workmanship
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot data reporting and SCADA system functionality
- Conduct routine maintenance and performance checks on microgrid systems to identify and address any potential issues.
- Perform diagnostic tests to optimize system performance and efficiency.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to implement changes to improve long term performance and reliability
- Respond promptly to service calls and troubleshoot issues related to microgrid systems.
- Analyze system logs and use diagnostic tools to identify and resolve technical problems efficiently.
- Provide on-site support to resolve complex technical challenges.
- Provide scheduled on call support as needed
- Troubleshoot control systems and ensure all devices, alarms, and equipment are functioning as expected
- Perform high-level field service work
- Perform duties 24/7 as needed during on call shifts
- Interact with clients and end-users to address concerns, provide training, and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Communicate effectively with customers to explain technical concepts and solutions in a clear and understandable manner.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all service activities, including installation, maintenance, and repairs.
- Generate service reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Record and document pre-commissioning and Factory Assurance Testing checklists
- Record and document post-commissioning and Site Acceptance Testing checklists
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, project management, and sales, to enhance overall system performance and customer experience.
- Provide feedback to the development team based on real-world experiences in the field.
- Work efficiently with different trades
- Support with Shop builds, including but not limited to wiring, assembly and quality control as needed
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of microgrid/BESS/Generator/Solar or related systems.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, power conversion electronics
- Understanding of electrical safety and codes
- Understanding of control systems
- Advanced understanding of communication protocols such as Modbus, TCP/IP, CAN, etc
- Advanced understanding of computer systems, networking, and hardware
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Windows, understanding of file systems and peripherals
- Familiarity with renewable energy technologies, including solar PV, and energy storage.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
- Natural curiosity and willingness to learn
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to travel to various project sites as needed, sometimes for long durations
- Working well under pressure during time-sensitive scenarios
- Certifications (desired):
- Relevant safety certifications (OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, First Aid, etc.).
