Your Impact at Ascend Analytics
We are looking for a Energy Optimization Engineer with a strong commitment to energy system modeling to join our team in Boulder, CO (remote work possible from other locations). You make cross-functional contributions to energy optimization, and will be responsible for advancing software solutions and analytics to support the clean-tech power revolution. Your strong analytical skills and ability to develop innovative problem-solving solutions will support mission critical decision analytics for renewable and battery storage power providers around the globe.
Job Responsibilities
- Solve complex analytic problems to make mission critical decisions for energy supply by:
- Translating requirements into model formulation
- Implementing forecasting and optimization models for operation and valuation of renewable resources and battery storage
- Developing both prototype models and production software
- Supporting existing commercial software and production systems
- Optimization techniques including: computational stochastic optimization, decision making under uncertainty, simulating high penetrations of wind and solar energy, optimizing generation under uncertainty, unit dispatch and transmission modeling, modeling of hydroelectric storage systems, and planning and control of electric battery storage.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s in electrical engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics, Power Systems, or related disciplines
- 1+ year experience in an energy optimization focused role in industry or academics
- 1+ year of general Software Development experience
- Optimization methods and commercial solvers (e.g., GAMS, Goroubi, CPLEX, Xpress)
- Ability to communicate with impact and confidence, both verbally and in writing
- Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, and work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics, Power Systems, or related disciplines.
- Familiarity with relational database platforms (Oracle, MS SQL, Postgres)
- Interest in learning about and deploying novel software solutions
- Prior knowledge of, or strong interest in learning about wholesale electricity markets
- Python and relevant libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy)
Compensation: $100,000 – $150,000
Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Ascend highly values our employees and often pays above industry average.
