The Power Systems Analyst will provide technical expertise, project management, personnel management, and partner engagement in support of the Laboratory for Energy And Power Solutions (LEAPS) to accelerate low-carbon energy transitions domestically and in emerging markets globally https://leaps.asu.edu. LEAPS is within Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and located at the Polytechnic campus, with collaborators and partnerships across the US and globally. The 40-person team is led by Dr. Nathan Johnson with a focus on translating use-inspired research into practical solutions for technology deployment, new policy and business models, and workforce development. The team has a broad set of subject matter expertise and life experiences, and thrives on finding creative solutions to challenging problems that often involves finding synergies across partners, perspectives, and goals. Under general direction, this role will perform detailed analysis in the areas of grid modernization, microgrids, mini-grids, distributed generation, smart grid, energy storage, and operational optimization for multiple public and private sector energy projects. Typical sponsoring organizations include the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, U.S. Department of Interior Tribal Electrification Program, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Solar for All Program, U.S. Agency for International Development , U.S. Trade and Development Agency, World Bank programs, electric utilities, developers, technology vendors, municipal and local governments, and private philanthropic organizations.. Typical locations for our projects are in the United States, United States Tribal Nations, Latin America, Pacific Island Region, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Essential Duties

Conduct feasibility/preliminary design studies for microgrids, mini-grids, and distributed energy resources (DER), with a focus in solar PV, battery storage, generators Conduct power engineering design studies of distribution networks including multi-phase unbalanced power flow and transient analyses, voltage regulation, short circuit, phase balancing, and protection and coordination studies.
Write detailed technical reports, tender documentation, and other materials, and communicate technical information clearly to stakeholders, including policy makers, legal teams, students, staff, and faculty.
Conduct reviews of equipment vendors, and complete review and recommendations of equipment plans before procurement. Present project findings and updates to internal and external audiences. Interact with various stakeholders, partners, and clients, preparing and delivering presentations to convey project progress and outcomes. Potentially assist in development of technical documentation for training and maintenance of equipment.
Use Smartsheet and other project management tools to manage small teams, mentor junior staff, and engage with stakeholders and partners.

Work on projects in developing nations and emerging market economies, including geographies such as US Tribal Nations, Latin America, the Pacific Island Region, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Participate in programs like USAID Power Africa, USTDA, and World Bank initiatives.

Technical Skills

  • Apply electrical standards (ANSI, IEC) and regulations to power engineering design, including earthing schemes, protection, household wiring, and cable sizing. Select appropriate inverters, charge controllers, and other assets, ensuring effective communication and integration of components.
  • Apply knowledge of energy economics and business models for mini-grids to develop sustainable and economically viable energy solutions in regions without a grid connection.
  • Develop comprehensive bills of materials and interact with vendors to source options.
  • Engage with vendors to identify and source the best components and materials for energy projects.
  • Techno-economic optimization design expertise, simulation tools such as Xendee, Homer, REopt, microgrid design toolkit, etc.
  • Power engineering design experience, simulation tools such as ETAP, OpenDSS, etc.
  • Power engineering design expertise, application electrical standards including ANSI, IEC, and others on topics such as
    • Distribution networks
    • Earthing schemes
    • Protection
    • Household wiring
    • Cable sizing
    • Develop a full bill of materials

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Engineering or other technical field (e.g., physics and sustainability) and three (3) years of energy related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Masters in Engineering
  • Five years industry experience working in roles such as energy generation system design, distribution system design, power engineering, feasibility studies, techno-economic modeling, or operating and maintaining power systems
  • Mix of experience working on projects in industrialized nations and developing nations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical standards and best practices
  • Registered as Professional Engineer

Working Environment
