AES recently formed a business unit focused on green hydrogen. Leveraging our industry-leading capabilities to develop, commercialize, construct, and operate renewable energy facilities, AES is now investing in the production of electrolytic green hydrogen. Our ambition is to develop, commercialize, construct, and operate a portfolio of electrolysis facilities that produce green hydrogen and advance the decarbonization goals of our customers. In the green hydrogen business, we are building core functional teams focused on origination, project development, technical capabilities, and market development.

This Senior Counsel position will report to the Chief Counsel, Hydrogen, and will be responsible for wide-ranging legal support for the Green Hydrogen team. This role can be located in any AES office in the United States (Salt Lake City, UT; Louisville, CO; Houston, TX; Arlington, VA; New York City, NY).


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice in all aspects of green hydrogen project development, construction, and financing, alongside specialist members of the AES Clean Energy Legal Team.

  • Structure and negotiate hydrogen offtake agreements.

  • Negotiate MOUs, joint development agreements and joint venture agreements.

  • Provide advice to the Green Hydrogen Team on federal and state policy and regulatory matters.

  • Participate in negotiation and implementation of federal awards.

  • Provide day-to-day legal support for the Green Hydrogen Team.

  • Manage outside counsel.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in project development, construction, and finance in the energy, power (renewable and/or thermal) and/or hydrogen sectors.

  • Experience in M&A and joint venture transactions is a plus.

  • 5-8 years experience at a law firm and/or sophisticated in-house legal department.

  • Ability to manage complex transactions independently.

  • Commercial mindset and willingness to partner with commercial counterparts.

  • Passion for driving decarbonization.

  • Alignment with AES Values of Safety First, Highest Standards, and All Together.

  • Smart, decisive, organized, methodical, and biased toward action.


Education:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
