Description/Job Summary
Lindahl Reed is seeking a Forest Products Industry Specialist to support the Department of Energys (DOE) Industrial Efficiency & Decarbonization Office and engage meaningfully to decarbonize the U.S. Forest Products industry. IEDOs mission is to accelerate the innovation and adoption of cost-effective technologies that eliminate industrial GHG emissions. The role requires interacting closely with IEDO staff and National Laboratory scientists on research, development, and deployment projects that produce significant energy savings and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the Forest Products Industry (pulp, paper, and wood products). Contractor will engage deeply in the Energy- and Emissions-Intensive Industries (EEII) teams technical projects and activities, interacting with experts in academia, industry, and at the national labs.
The position will support and inform an RD&D program focused on developing low-carbon technologies through managing a large federal RD&D program with partners in industry, academia, and national laboratories. The role may also require engaging with other programs at the Department of Energy and across the Federal government.
Position Responsibilities:
The position will have responsibilities in the following areas:
- Subject Matter Expertise: Provide subject matter expertise to inform the development and implementation of forest products industry decarbonization technologies. and developing a strong understanding of the current technical and market barriers to technology development, commercialization, and utilization related to decarbonization.
- Strategic Planning: Contribute to strategic plans for technical research and development that advance the IEDO and EEII mission, resulting in measurable and trackable savings. Support activities associated with the sub-program including the development, maintenance, and execution of a decarbonization strategy which includes exploring areas of interest and participating in the process for and management of funding awards and projects.
- Program Management: Collaborate on the active project management of IEDO awards to oversee a research, development, and demonstration portfolio of transformative low-carbon pulp, paper, and wood products technologies in the United States. Strong project management skills are a plus.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with DOE staff and contractors in a program of activities to build and maintain relationships with leaders from industry and academia. As needed, engage in public-facing aspects of the IEDO forest products industry program.
- Communication: Support DOE staff to prepare and present written and oral briefings and reports to senior program staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Requirements:
- A Ph.D. or masters degree in pulp and paper science and engineering, biomaterials science, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering.
- Relevant knowledge and experience in forest products industry plant operations as well as materials and process technologies associated with pulp, paper, and wood products materials. Operations or RD&D experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of industrial decarbonization technologies to recognize realistic opportunities for market expansion based on practical considerations and cost/benefit potentials.
- Knowledge of business issues relevant to the development in the industrial sector, including key market applications, current and evolving structure of supply chains, and intellectual property considerations relevant to manufacturing technology development.
- Membership in pertinent associations is helpful (Tappi, AIChE, etc.).
- A passion for improving energy efficiency and industrial decarbonization.
- An interest in participating in a multi-disciplinary, metrics-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Strong written, organizational, analytical, and research skills, and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
Preferred qualifications:
- Located in the Washington DC area with a hybrid work arrangement.
- 10+ years of experience in Relevant industrial or other related experience are preferred.
- Experience in operations or RD&D experience is a plus.
