Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Materials Handling Supervisor for Kairos Power in Alameda, California, Materials Handler supports all SF Bay Area locations with shipping & receiving services, chemical inventory support, materials management, and any general warehouse, manufacturing, and R&D support. The workspaces supported include office, R&D lab, warehouse, and light manufacturing facilities in Alameda and Oakland. The ideal candidate will have at least one year prior experience as a forklift operator in a warehouse setting working with computerized systems, including receiving and inventory control software. They will also have familiarity with the safety requirements associated with handling, storing, and shipping hazardous chemicals. Additional training will be provided to become a certified IATA/DOT Dangerous Goods Shipper. In addition to managing materials, operating material handling equipment, and assisting with the site’s chemical inventory management, the Materials Handler will perform general duties related to the upkeep and maintenance of the work environments listed above including indoor and outdoor spaces for landfill/recycling/organics/construction debris/hazardous waste containers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Daily parcel receiving and distribution to end users (FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS, and others)
  • Mailbox pick up and drop off to support the site’s Administrative Services team
  • Shipping (parcels, raw materials, finished machined goods, chemicals)
  • Process the return of unneeded, mis-shipped, or recalled equipment and supplies
  • Receive shipments, verifies packing slip, prepares and files related paperwork
  • Use forklift, pallet jack, dollies, and/or carts to move heavy packages, lab equipment, furniture, and large plastic or metal storage barrels
  • Deliver special orders to designated areas which includes driving of company vehicles between Bay Area sites
  • Follow applicable facilities upkeeping and safety procedures
  • Notify vendors of obsolete or damaged equipment or supplies to be returned or repaired
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work area; help manufacturing and R&D staff keeping their areas organized and free of trip hazards or excessive clutter in work areas
  • Facilitate non-hazardous waste/recycling/organics pickup with local waste, recycling, and scrap pickup services
  • Push and pull 3-5 cubic yard trash and recycling bins occasionally (2-3 times per week)
  • Perform receipt inspections of materials and components in accordance with QA program requirements
  • Organize compressed gas cylinders and assist providing access to chemicals for lab staff
  • Perform Chemical Inventory Management become trained as backup administrator for chemical inventory software platform
  • Receives chemical inventory, verifies invoices, scans into chemical management system, places in appropriate storage location
  • Move liquefied gas dewars on wheels and large compressed gas containers on hand trucks
  • Create and place hazardous chemical labels on appropriate products
  • Monitor hazardous waste storage areas and ensure secondary containment where needed
  • Assist with hazardous chemicals inventory auditing and update inventory information

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • 1+ year of experience in a materials management, shipping and receiving or Central supply/distribution environment; experience handling and shipping chemicals
  • Certified Dangerous Goods Shipper for Air Transport (IATA) and Ground Transport (DOT) preferred; willingness to be trained/certified and perform these duties is required
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and be insured on company vehicles
  • Knowledge of general storekeeping, inventory management, and stock control methods
  • Knowledge of computer systems and enterprise software used to manage material receipt, transfer, and consumption
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and organizational skills supporting cross-functional teams
  • Ability to problem solve and work in a fast-paced start up environment
  • Prior forklift, pallet jack, ladder safety, rolling safety ladder experience is required
  • Prior fire safety and first aid safety training experience is desired
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others

Physical Requirements

  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 50 pounds in all directions
  • Moving objects up to 100 pounds with a cart, dolly, or hand truck
  • Ascending or descending ladders and stairs up to 12′ tall, as well as scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
  • Working from heights >4 feet with fall protection to rig loads for transport or movement with crane equipment
  • Ability to use hand tools
  • Ability to see, hear, and smell differing conditions to sense or respond to hazards or alarms in the work environment

The hourly rate for this position is $27-$30 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
