Job Description

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act) has created the most aggressive climate change goals in the nation and requires an ambitious agenda that blends proven catalysts with innovative approaches while operating across a broader energy arena that is rapidly evolving. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a driving force in realizing this agenda. NYSERDA works with stakeholders that span residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New Yorks clean energy economy.
  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.
  • Enable New Yorks communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Job Overview

Energy storage is critical to achieving the Climate Acts ambitious goals, and New York is poised to become a market leader with the June 2024 PSC approval of the Energy Storage Roadmap authorizing NYSERDA to procure 3,000 megawatts of bulk energy storage in support of the state target of 6,000 megawatts of storage deployed by 2030. NYSERDAs new Bulk Energy Storage (BES) Program, housed within NYSERDAs Large-Scale Renewables (LSR) unit, will utilize innovative incentive mechanisms that are modeled after other LSR programs but are a first-of-its-kind for energy storage.

The BES team is seeking a project manager/senior project manager, ideally with energy industry knowledge and experience, to provide critical program support in managing the procurement process from solicitation development to release to awards. This role will be essential in minimizing project attrition and ensuring the selection of mature, high-value projects. The project manager will serve as an important resource for internal and external stakeholders during procurements and report into the newly-created Bulk Energy Storage team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage solicitation applications and act as the primary point of contact with internal and external stakeholders related to these applications
  • Obtain project information from developers or other external industry stakeholders such as the relevant regional transmission organization, permitting authority, project financiers, or local communities
  • Systematically analyze project information, particularly as relates to non-price factors for evaluating project bids such as project viability and socioeconomic benefits
  • Support preparation of annual program reports describing overall progress
  • Engage proactively with internal stakeholders to ensure successful procurements from release to award to finalized contract
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned
  • Ability to perform all managerial and supervisory responsibilities with demonstrated experience fostering respect, diversity, equity and inclusion across the workforce.

Minimum Qualifications

  • For Project Manager (Salary: $76,051 – $127,474)
    • 5 years of relevant competitive procurement, project development, financing, or operational experience. Bachelors degree required.
  • For Sr. Project Manager (Salary: $111,925-$141,439)
    • 7 years of relevant competitive procurement, renewable energy, project development, financing, or operational experience. Bachelors degree required.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy and energy storage technologies and development processes
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent record keeping and database management skills
  • Strong ability to perform both independently and within teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Masters degree with 4 years experience for the Project Manager title; A Masters degree with 6 years experience for the Sr. Project Manager title.
  • Experience with managing renewable energy or energy storage project solicitations
  • Industry experience in renewable energy or energy storage (i.e. with an OEM, developer, EPC, O&M provider or investor)
  • Knowledge of ISO processes, including wholesale energy markets and interconnection processes
