To achieve this, the team supports AFL-CIO affiliated unions, state federations of labor, and central labor councils in organizing new jobs and helps them to secure existing good union jobs.

Over the next two years, the Federation’s priority is to ensure that federal investment in clean energy produces the maximum number of good union jobs, particularly for young, black, and brown workers, and for women.

The Energy Specialist reports to, and works under the supervision of, the Strategic Advisor to the President on Clean Energy Jobs. We’re looking for mid-career applicants with experience from the labor movement, great technical knowledge about the energy sector, and the desire to make a difference for workers in this high priority field. Good people skills and the ability to work in and with teams are key.

  • Ensure timely and complete flow of information about activities and responsibilities.
  • Represent the Federation at conferences and other speaking engagements, as appropriate.
  • Preparation of materials for the Strategic Advisor including but not limited to briefing materials, data collection, corporate research and analysis memoranda.
  • Support the team in developing and delivering sectoral and regional approaches to clean energy that work for affiliated unions and state and local bodies.
  • Provide materials for and speak at the Clean Energy Jobs affiliate staff table, webinars and meetings with state and local labor bodies, and other convenings.
  • Help the Strategic Adviser staff the AFL-CIO Energy Committee.
  • Identify and help to develop new strategic opportunities for the Federation in the field of clean energy.
  • Contribute content to educational and informational materials for affiliates, state federations, and central labor councils.
  • Contribute to legislative and regulatory analysis, testimony, comments to proposed regulations and implementation guidance, and policy papers in the field of clean energy.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Experience from the labor movement.
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in a relevant social science or hard science field, but candidates with a decade or more of relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, research, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience working in and with teams.
  • Team-, movement- and affiliate-oriented. Fearless yet respectful when engaging with our movement.
  • Comes up with solutions and proposals; follows up and delivers.
  • High personal integrity and accountability.
  • Great people skills.
  • Ability to work extended or irregular hours as needed.
