Your Impact

The Outside Plant (OSP) Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services through a highly detailed collection of telecommunications information from the job site. This position requires a working level of knowledge in all technical aspects of fiber networks. The successful candidate is responsible for in-person validation of the existing field design and layout of the OSP telecommunications network to include aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities. May serve as an informal lead to more junior staff from time to time.

Core Responsibilities

  • 3+ years of experience in fiber-optic/telecommunications/telecom construction industry
  • Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design), and Make-ready issues
  • Knowledge of obtaining right of ways and easements where required and the ability to make the appropriate notations on the field notes for the desktop teams
  • Ability to read and understand as build prints, and be able to identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, select routing of lines and equipment required for projects
  • Familiar with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), ESRI, and shapefile functionality
  • Able to identify different types of utilities, potential conflicts, and violations based on regulatory standards (RUS, NESC, NEC, GO95, etc.) Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with an acceptable driving record, and be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to train peers
  • Ability to learn new technical systems and tools
  • Ability to resolve problems following standard practices, using judgment within defined policies and guidelines

Specific duties may vary or evolve based on business and client needs.

Core Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in the fiber-optic/telecommunications/telecom construction industry.
  • Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design)
  • Experience fielding & engineering road moves is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of aerial, buried, underground copper & fiber facilities.
  • Understanding of OSP construction techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand digital GIS maps, conduit records, & layout drawings.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with an acceptable driving record, and be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical/Work Environment

  • Ability to frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel extensively, up to 100%, with potential overnight stays for up to two weeks.
  • Work outdoors in various conditions (heat, snow, rain, wind) approximately 95% of the time.
  • Walk up to 3 miles per day on various terrains, including gravel, pavement, and grass.
  • Follow OSHA, state, and local safety standards.
  • Ability to work safely and independently in varying weather conditions.

Compensation: $21.00-$29.00 hourly/DOE
