Property Accountant

Please Note : This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate will be expected to work from the Southern Company Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta for 1-3 days per week, with the frequency determined by the workload and meeting schedules.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Property Accountant ensures property related transactions are accounted for correctly and timely for internal and external reporting purposes for Southern Power Company, an SEC registrant. This position is within the Property, Materials, and Lease accounting team, reporting to a team leader, and is located in Atlanta, Georgia. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting principles and experience with fixed asset accounting.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial statement supporting schedules
  • Prepare depreciation expense actual to budget variance explanations and report to management
  • Maintain property records in the PowerPlan fixed asset software application: monthly tasks include calculating and reviewing depreciation expense; calculating and reviewing capitalized interest; closing fixed assets; monitoring in progress capital projects and updating the status of capital work orders; retiring assets; and other administrative updates as needed.
  • Review and approve capital projects for appropriateness
  • Review capital charges to ensure adherence to accounting standards and the Companys capitalization policies
  • Serve as subject matter expert by providing accounting guidance to both accounting and non-accounting personnel in response to capital related inquiries
  • Provide support for financial audits, SEC filings, and tax filing activities
  • Ensure internal controls are designed and performed to effectively achieve their objectives
  • Respond to periodic and ad hoc requests related to fixed assets
  • Create annual budget and reforecasts for depreciation expense
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Job Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or a related field is required
  • Advanced degree in accounting or a related field is a plus
  • CPA license (or equivalent) is preferred

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • 3 or more years of accounting experience is required
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles is required
  • Experience with asset accounting is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; especially Oracle and PowerPlan is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications, particularly Excel, is highly desirable
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying financial information to non-financial colleagues
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and the ability to detect inconsistencies in data
  • Ability to manage time and work to tight deadlines
