ROLE SUMMARY
This role is for a subject matter expert (SME) in substation design, focusing on the substation portion of BESS plants. You would be reviewing drawings and assisting in substation designs. You would be focused on helping us create the smartest, safest, and most cost-effective design for our customers. You would be part of a team of SMEs of different disciplines, and part of the engineering organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and Engineering: Develop and review utility-scale substation designs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and requirements. This involves layout planning, equipment selection, busbar configurations, cable sizing and routing, high level P&C/SCADA relay and equipment sizing and selection and adherence to design standards.
- Basis of Design: Create and maintain the basis of design documentation based on customer needs, local regulations and internal best practices to keep the team on track.
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Analyze and resolve complex issues related to substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and switchgear. Develop maintenance schedules and procedures to ensure optimal performance.
- Project Management: Lead substation projects from conception to completion, coordinating with various stakeholders such as contractors, engineers, and regulatory agencies. Ensure projects are completed within budget and schedule constraints.
- Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities within substations. Implement measures to mitigate risks and enhance safety protocols.
- Training and Knowledge Sharing: Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on substation operations, maintenance practices, and safety procedures. Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry best practices.
SKILLS
- Expertise and Experience: Extensive experience in power systems with a specialization in substation design at Medium and High Voltage level (up to 138kV). A deep understanding of substation design (including system studies, i.e. short circuit, coordination, arc flash, power flow, grounding, etc.), operation, and maintenance practices is essential. Experience in managing a team of junior designers and drafters, reviewing drawings and providing mark ups and guidance is required. Experience with the interconnection process with major utilities.
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical capabilities to diagnose complex issues and develop effective solutions. The ability to interpret data from various sources and make informed decisions is crucial.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills to convey technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including stakeholders, team members, and regulatory authorities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- Graduate of University program in Electrical Engineering or equivalent education plus experience
- Minimum 8+ years experience in power generation & distribution environment preferred
- Certifications/Licenses
- Professional engineering designation preferred
- Other Competencies
- Understanding and ability to review power system studies done in ETAP/SKM, PSS/E, CDEGS, and PSCAD
- Knowledge of power distribution system fundamentals, Engineering Standards and distribution system specs such as NEC, UL, IEEE, ANSI, OBC, NFPA, etc.
- Knowledge of MV/HV equipment specifications and selection, including air-insulated, oil insulated and GIS.
- Familiarity with health and safety legislation
- Organized in time management, priority setting, strategic, insightful, creative and adaptable.
- Ability to work with all levels of management and across multiple and varied functional teams to executive levels
