We are looking to fill an immediate need within our Engineering department to help grow our design and estimation capabilities.
Job Summary
The Design Engineering Lead is responsible for coordinating, organizing, and supervising all engineering activities within the department. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining engineering processes that drive quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement. As a leader within the engineering team, the Design Engineering Lead will supervise a team of engineers, manage department resources, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. This role includes estimating material and labor costs for manufacturing projects in response to requests for proposals, performing design calculations, and collaborating with the drafting department to complete designs for fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Supervision:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of engineers, ensuring alignment with company goals and project requirements.
- Allocate and manage department resources, including personnel and equipment, to optimize productivity and efficiency.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative engineering environment, encouraging continuous learning and development.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and develop growth plans for team members.
- Engineering & Design:
- Coordinate, organize, and supervise all engineering activities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal processes.
- Perform ASME & API calculations for customer RFQs utilizing Compress and AME Tank software packages.
- Review ASME & API fabrication drawings for code compliance prior to customer submittal.
- Prepare Pressure Vessel/Heat Exchanger Job Design packages (Calculations, Inspection Traveler, Weld Map, BOM) prior to A.I. review.
- Develop radiographic maps for jobs and ensure that all design-related documentation is complete and accurate.
- Review and approve Material Test Reports (MTRs) for ASME Section II compliance.
- Maintain working knowledge of ASME/API/TEMA specification changes and ensure department compliance.
- Project Management:
- Collaborate with Sales, Project Management, and Operations departments to develop manufacturing plans that enhance operations competitiveness.
- Estimate material and labor costs for manufacturing projects, ensuring competitive and accurate proposals.
- Field questions from shop and customers, providing expert guidance and resolving engineering-related issues.
- Oversee the submission of RFQs to vendors for material costs and ensure timely updates of customer RFQ pricing when requested.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Develop, implement, and maintain engineering processes that drive quality and efficiency.
- Lead initiatives to identify and implement improvements in engineering and manufacturing processes.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices to maintain the departments competitive edge.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Receive and log customer RFQs, ensuring accurate tracking and timely response.
- Develop customer RFQ material requirement lists and prepare customer RFQ letters.
- Perform other duties as required to support the overall objectives of the Engineering department and the company.
Competencies:
- Proficiency in ASME and API software (Compress, AME Tank) and other engineering tools (AutoCAD, ProE, Inventor, SolidWorks).
- Ability to quickly assess manufacturing issues related to design and tolerancing.
- Knowledge of metals markets.
- Experience in estimation or project management within the tank and vessel manufacturing industry.
- Understanding of welding practices (MIG/TIG/SAW/Laser/Plasma) and ASME codes and standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, mathematics, statistics, and data analysis.
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask with multiple estimates and designs simultaneously.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Experience:
- Experience in the tank and vessel manufacturing industry preferred.
- Proven experience in a leadership or supervisory role within an engineering department.
