WSP is currently initiating a search for a Fire Protection & Technical Safety Engineer for our Houston, Texas office for Offshore Wind, Renewable-Energy and Energy Transition projects. The following locations will also be considered: Austin and San Antonio, Texas. Offshore Wind is one of the fastest growing energy sectors for WSP and this position offers excellent opportunity to grow as a subject matter expert and also as a multi-discipline Project Manager.

Your Impact
- Identify and interpret regulatory requirements relevant for fire protection of offshore wind farm and substation facilities.
- Identify and evaluate fire risk and propose fire protection measures which are apt for offshore environment.
- Evaluate applicable fire protection codes and standards requirements with distinction between onshore vs offshore industry and coordinate response with input from fellow project team members.
- Proactively work project team of both WSP and Client to identify and establish design basis requirements (Ref. NFPA 850). Work toward achieving consensus in resolving technical issue and achieve a fit for purpose solution.
- Review vendor documentation, follow up with vendors for clarification, suggest alternatives to meet project need in alignment with project design basis or applicable regulatory requirements.
- Proactively engage with customers / vendors for new technology in the field of fire protection; Pursue opportunities to deliver value added services by leveraging width and depth of WSP organization
- Uphold workplace safety and abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Serve as a lead engineer / engineer-of-record for fire protection discipline deliverables.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other engineering degree closely related to fire protection or NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist Certification
- 1-3 years industry and fire protection engineering experience.
- Hands on experience with the NFPA codes and Standards such as NFPA 850, NFPA 750, NFPA 20, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, NFPA 92, NFPA 2001.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulation 29 CFR.
- Motivation to learn multi-discipline aspects, understand context and implication of fire protection requirements for different types of projects (onshore vs offshore environment).
- Excellent written and oral communication writing skills.
- Ability to support team spirit and ‘can do’ attitude.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Fire Protection Specialist by NFPA or Professional Engineer Certification or ability to get such certification within 2 years of undertaking this role.
- Hands-on-experience in offshore / Maritime or large Engineering projects involving use of NFPA Codes and Standards and local fire department requirements.
- Prior experience with offshore wind or offshore O&G projects involving OSHA or BSEE/BOEM regulations is desired.
- Interested in continued learning and expanding knowledge base, understanding the need of Customers who are developing offshore wind energy.
- Actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
