About The Role
The Staff Safety Engineer will play a key role in developing a site Safety Engineering team. This candidate will provide safety engineering technical support for engineering design, construction, and sustainable operations. Engineer focus areas include Equipment Safety, Process Safety, and Ergonomics. The Safety Engineer will support all EHS site initiatives.
What You Will Do
- Provides technical environmental, safety, and health support and information to production and corporate personnel.
- Supports Process Safety Management (PSM) Program and owns execution of high-quality risk assessments & risk management deliverables.
- Supports facilitates risk studies including: PHA, HazOp/LOPA, HAZID, and other risk assessment methods.
- Facilitates reliability studies including: FTA, PFMEA, DFMEA
- Leads design engineering technical deep dives for green field and brown field engineering projects.
- Drives scoping & implementation of engineering safety/ hazard mitigation design strategies.
- Lead efforts for modeling scenarios and working with external consultants/ partners as needed to conduct modeling such as CFD, FDS, PHAST, Canary, iPRISM, ALOHA, and other risk modeling tools.
- Leads follow-through reviews/coordination to ensure identified risks & mitigation efforts have been included in engineering design.
- Develop standardization of equipment safety specifications.
- Perform machinery safety risk assessment (MRA), equipment buyoffs, and support safety controls change requests.
- Review equipment design to ensure equipment and tooling adhere to ANSI, ISO, RIA, EN, NFPA, GB, and OSHA equipment, machinery, and electrical safety standards components that could be affected by new or modified equipment.
- Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) to ensure manufacturers have incorporated applicable ANSI and OSHA standards into the equipment.
- Perform (SAT) Site acceptance testing, to ensure equipment is safe for operation.
- Conduct safety functionality testing on newly installed or modified equipment to ensure the safety control devices perform as intended by the safety logic.
- Lead routine Safety Audits to ensure machinery is operated as designed and all safety devices are functioning as intended and identify opportunities to mitigate risks.
- Implement project management tools to follow equipment from design through start of production.
- Uses ergonomic guidelines to address current manufacturing injury concerns and future model planning.
- Assist in chemical approval requests and updating HMIS permit accordingly.
- Ensure compliance with Local, State, and Federal health and safety regulations.
- Supports overall EHS site initiatives.
- Understands and follows all standards of IATF16949 and VDA 6.3 quality standards.
- Understands and follows all standards of ISO14001 environmental standards.
- Performs all other related assignments (including special projects) as required in a professional and cooperative manner.
What You Need
The requirements listed below are minimum requirements for the job. - A minimum of three years in an engineering discipline.
- A minimum of two years of experience supporting safety, health and environmental operations in a manufacturing/production environment.
- Knowledge of battery manufacturing, EV manufacturing, or refinery operations is a plus.
- Extensive knowledge of State and Federal safety standards. A working knowledge of ergonomic standards and evaluation tools; working knowledge of the company manufacturing processes.
- Able to work cross-functionally with staff in Operations, Maintenance, Production, Engineering, and Quality.
- Experience working and leading a team across cultural and discipline boundaries.
- Life Safety Design – Familiar with IBC & IFC for life safety design requirements.
- Fire Protection Engineering – Engineering basis of design for identified hazardous areas and associated fire control systems.
- Process Controls- Understanding safety system requirements for the basic process control loop (BPCS) and safety instrumented systems (SIS) as they pertain to SIL/PL ratings.
What is “Nice to Have”?
- Bachelor’s degree in process controls, electrical, chemical, safety engineering, or mechanical engineering, preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office applications and knowledge of AutoCAD and Inventor.
- Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, OneNote, SharePoint).
- Proficiency with conferencing systems (Microsoft Teams)
- Experience or familiarity with the dynamics of start-up environments, showcasing an ability to thrive in agile and fast-paced settings.
Travel
Occasional domestic and international travel required.

Work Environment
