Position Summary: The President’s Office leads planning efforts around long-term sustainability for HDC’s portfolio of affordable housing, including implementation of local, state, and federal laws and programs to decarbonize buildings. The Sustainability Intern will support the team’s work in this area, with a focus on evaluating HDC’s portfolio for feasibility of solar energy and other decarbonization measures.

This role is housed in the Division of Policy and Analytics (P&A), which provides policy, planning, operational, and analytics advisory services to help HDC and the City of New York advance the life outcomes of city residents through affordable housing. The division’s work is interdisciplinary, and our projects often consider intersecting issues of affordable housing, finance, economic and social policy, social equity, governance, management, and technology. In this highly collaborative role, projects often have interdepartmental and interagency impact. The Division of Policy and Analytics is part of the President’s Office. This position reports to the Vice President for Policy and Analytics.

Position Type: Fall 2024 Internship

Office Location: NYC/Financial District

Hourly Rate: Graduate $19.00/hour

If needed, HDC will fully support an intern’s application for credit or stipend from their school/university.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and synthesize research on best practices, technical requirements, costs, and other issues related to decarbonization in multi-family buildings, particularly solar energy feasibility.
  • Identify critical data necessary to evaluate buildings for solar and other decarbonization measures; assist with filling data gaps through additional desktop or field research, as needed.
  • Execute data extraction, cleaning, and synthesis in Excel.
  • Develop a set of guidelines and an evaluation framework to be used by HDC to assess buildings for solar and other decarbonization measures, including assessing eligibility for key federal funding sources.
  • Collaborate with teams within HDC (including Engineering, Asset Management, and Development) and with external partners as needed.
  • Other related tasks as requested by the VP.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be pursuing a Graduate-level degree in a related field
  • Subject expertise in building decarbonization
  • Proficiency in Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Graduate degree in Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Building Technology, or similar field
  • Proficiency in GIS
  • Familiarity with the City of New York’s building decarbonization goals, laws, and programs
  • Familiarity with existing data sources on New York City buildings and energy usage
