Job Description

Major Oak is a 305 megawatt lignite-fired power plant in Robertson County, near Bremond, Texas, about 150 miles south of Dallas and 160 miles northwest of Houston. The plant uses circulating fluidized-bed combustion technology that minimizes emissions and reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx). The injection of crushed limestone in the process is used to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.

Opportunity Summary

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for participating in daily preventive, scheduled, and repair maintenance activities to ensure plant safety, efficiency, and timeliness. The role involves collaborating with team members to maintain and repair plant mechanical systems and buildings, performing routine troubleshooting, and supporting preventive maintenance programs. Additionally, the technician will supervise contractors, assist in developing maintenance procedures, and contribute to the upkeep of plant technical documentation.

Primary Functions

  • Participate daily in preventive, scheduled, and repair maintenance activities to ensure safety, efficiency, and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with team members to carry out maintenance tasks effectively.
  • Maintain and repair all plant mechanical systems and buildings, performing routine troubleshooting as needed.
  • Promptly report any unusual conditions to plant management personnel.
  • Assist in reviewing the spare parts inventory to reduce equipment downtime and ensure high plant availability.
  • Contribute to the plant’s preventive maintenance program by performing routine maintenance duties and collecting trending information for the Maintenance Manager.
  • Aid in coordinating and scheduling mechanical work associated with outages.
  • Supervise contractors and outside technicians involved in in-plant repairs and upgrades.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance (PM) when plant conditions allow.
  • Assist in developing PM procedures.
  • Support maintenance and repairs related to plant shutdowns.
  • Participate in the administrative upkeep of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Skillfully set up and operate machine shop tools to perform precise machining work and align and balance rotating equipment.
  • Inspect and repair turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment.
  • Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings subjected to varying temperatures and pressures.
  • Expertly assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust various types of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Complete any other tasks assigned by the Maintenance Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and others must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The standard work schedule comprises four 10-hour shifts, either from Tuesday to Friday or Monday to Thursday, running from 0700 to 1730. This position may demand extended working hours and shifts that vary, including weekends and holidays, as dictated by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. Periodically, “on-call” status will be required as necessary.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $32 to $38 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent qualification, including trade school, military service, or technical training schools, is a prerequisite. Additional professional training is highly valued.
  • Four years of hands-on experience in power generating facility maintenance, preferably as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or in a similar role.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and a proven track record in performing routine maintenance duties while collecting essential data for analysis.
  • Technical knowledge should include an understanding of power plant operations and proficiency in maintaining and repairing plant mechanical systems, including routine troubleshooting.
  • Expertise in assembling, disassembling, repairing, and adjusting both electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret precision measuring equipment for accurate assessments.
  • Proficiency in responding effectively to audio alarms and variations in sound.
  • Experience in overhauling, repairing, and aligning pumps and motors, as well as performing maintenance on various types of valves.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills essential for effective coordination and reporting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
