The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is hiring a Connecticut Careers Trainee to work in the Office of Climate Planning, based in Hartford. Upon successful completion of the training period, the candidate will receive a promotion to the target class of Research Analyst.
POSITION DETAILS
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position on first shift. This position will be located in Hartford, with opportunities for hybrid work available.
The Office of Climate Planning has a collaborative work environment with a team-based approach to most projects. The Connecticut Careers Trainee target class: Research Analyst will report to the Director of the Office of Climate Planning and support the development and implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation and resilience strategies through planning and policy. Additionally, the position works with members of the climate planning team and the other programs in the Office of the Commissioner, including the Offices of Environmental Justice, Planning and Program Development, Communications, and Governmental Affairs as well as staff from across the three branches of DEEP (see DEEPs structure and mission).
*Salary Note: During the first year of training, Connecticut Career Trainees with a Bachelor’s degree earn $54,388 per year, and Connecticut Career Trainees with a Master’s degree earn $56,354 per year. During the second year of training, the salary increases to $62,233 per year.

ABOUT DEEP’S OFFICE OF CLIMATE PLANNING
DEEP’s Office of Climate Planning is located in the Office of the Commissioner and as such advises agency leadership on plans and policies to equitably and affordably plan for Connecticut’s transition to a decarbonized economy and to enhance the climate resiliency of our natural and built environment. The Office works in partnership with the Energy, Environmental Conservation, and Environmental Quality branches of DEEP to meet the state’s statutory emissions reduction goals of 45% by 2030 and 80% by 2050 and a zero-carbon electric supply by 2040; as well as addressing the impacts of climate change on the state and its communities.
The Office takes a leading role on interagency and public participation in the climate planning process, including administering the Governor’s Council on Climate Change, the EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Climate Action Plans, and coordinating the implementation of climate policy through legislation, executive orders, and government plans and programs. The office participates in the implementation of ongoing and emerging federal funding opportunities for climate action – primarily through EPA, DOE, NOAA, and FEMA with the historic funding investments of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. This work includes assisting partners in local government, regional Councils of Governments, and environmental organizations to compete for federal grants for climate mitigation and resilience. The office conducts these activities with a focus on equity and environmental justice to ensure the costs and benefits of climate mitigation are shared and that vulnerable communities are prioritized in climate adaptation and resilience strategies.
The Office also coordinates Connecticut’s commitments to national and international climate action, including representing the state in the Under 2 coalition and the US Climate Alliance.
