Plant Operator Roles and Responsibilities:

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, is seeking an experienced Operations Tech for the Gulf Coast Ammonia facility in Texas City, TX.

The Gulf Coast Ammonia facility is located in Texas City and consists of a Steam Methane Reformer, Air Separation Plant, Ammonia Plant and associated utilities, supplying Ammonia to the customer.

The production facility is owned by Air Products and Gulf Coast Ammonia, with Air Products being the operator. The facility operates and requires support on a 24/7 basis.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

This role will initially be responsible for supporting the development of facility operating, safety, emergency, communication, and work process procedures. Additionally, this role will be involved in commissioning the process systems for all 3 plants until start-up. When in both the start-up and operating phases of this project, the operations technician role is an on-shift position, supporting the shift operations team through operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting the equipment and facility.

You will be also responsible for controlling and monitoring the processes that produce hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia (e.g., utility systems, compressors, rotating equipment, and DCS operation). You will be expected to maintain water chemistry, perform daily operational tasks, and preventative maintenance as required.

  • Work directly with the SMR, ASU and NH3 loop operations site supervisors as well as the shift team lead, pipeline department, and Customer Service Center (CSC) to monitor the operation of the facility, as well as the site utilities.
  • Adhere to operating, communication and decision-making protocols to address real time supply / demand balance changes.
  • Support operation priorities on a daily basis for the ASU, SMR and NH3 plants based on overall system status, request rate, maintenance activities etc.
  • Escalate process, safety or other issues to the appropriate parties per protocol.
  • Comply with the requirements outlined in the operator progression guide. Ensure training for oneself is up to date, including but not limited to, worker safety policies, facility processes, operating procedures, troubleshooting and operational discipline.
  • Understand, support, and execute as required the Emergency Response Plan for both site and areas where the APCI operated pipelines run.
  • Participate in emergency drills within the facility to maintain and reinforce response skills and knowledge of the site emergency response plan.
  • Assist in the investigation of injuries, environmental excursions or releases, cost of non-conformance and Near-Miss incidents.
  • Know, comply, and enforce safe work procedures and operational discipline practices to the operations team and contractors.
  • Detailed understanding of all facility Environmental Permits and the ability to escalate an environmental incident.
  • Act as the Hazwoper Technician.
  • Detailed understanding of facility interactions and transitions between all units during upsets.
  • Assist in the implementation of Best Practices.
  • Comply with the sites internal programs including the MAS Team, Zero Leak Program, IRR Program, Hearing Conservation Program, Hazwoper and Respirator Program.
  • Maintain an error-free execution. Pay very close attention to details and execute work to the highest possible standard. Apply a Continuous Improvement philosophy to daily work.
  • Provide technical and hands- on support as required during shutdowns.
  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for the production units.
  • Demonstrate competency with Safety Work Permits and Hot Work Safety Permits
  • Capable of leading the Mobile Ammonia Suppression Team to manage a leak.
  • This role is a sensitive position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to climb ladders and steps and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Elevated work required.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Must be able to wear self-contained and air purifying respiratory protection.
  • Be able to meet call-in requirements as needed.
  • Must be willing to be on call.
  • Must be willing to work 12-hr rotating shifts on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be clean shaven.
  • Must be willing to work at a tobacco-free facility.
  • Must pass an OSHA approved ERT Physical.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Previous pipeline controller experience a plus but not required.

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to Operational Excellence with a focus on reliable operation
  • Must be a self-starter with a positive attitude and willing to work in a team environment.
  • Good computer skills to facilitate and operate SAP and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proven commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
  • Military experience is a plus.

Education and Licensing Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Certificate in process technology or maintenance field (preferred) or 1-3 years minimum in a manufacturing/production, processing, or chemical/ petrochemical environment.

Work Hours & Benefits:

  • Must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts and weekends and take 24 hour.
  • Position is in a 12-hr shift rotation. Includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • On-call responsibilities on a rotating basis.
  • Must be a self-starter and willing to work alone on nights, weekends, and holidays.
