Job Description

Job Title: Project Developer

Location: Indiana, Illinois, Portland, OR, or Bend, OR

Our successful renewable energy development firm, located in Portland and Bend, Oregon, is seeking a Project Developer to contribute to the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in the Illinois and Indiana markets. In this role, you will be the primary point of contact with landowners and will work collaboratively with the development team to bring new development opportunities to fruition. The ideal candidate needs to be capable of being an expert in every aspect of the project development cycle.

The company is relatively small and growing quickly, highly entrepreneurial, fast paced, and can offer a level of engagement that most large organizations cannot. We hire doers who are driven, take ownership of their work, and proactively seek out problems that need to be solved. We prefer this position to be based in Indiana or Illinois but will also consider applicants in the Portland or Bend area who are willing to travel to IN/IL on a frequent basis.

Essential Functions

  • Work collaboratively with the development team and third-party consultants to identify land suitable for solar development.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the company and landowners.
  • Conduct and facilitate lease negotiations with landowners and companies to acquire land rights to develop a successful project.
  • Explain our project to the landowners effectively by setting reasonable expectations, realistic timing, and clear financial arrangements.
  • Manage the project through the local permitting process by working independently and collaboratively with our internal team members and external resources (i.e. attorneys, engineers, planners, and other consultants).
  • Build relationships with and foster support from various stakeholders (i.e. state, county and local governments, community groups, and neighbors).
  • Some travel is required to meet with landowners, attend land use permitting meetings, and visit other stakeholders.
  • Assist the team with the development process, including various tasks that may include coordinating sub-consultants, obtaining preliminary title reports, supporting land use permit applications, and tracking various policy initiatives or regulations.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

While we do not expect the successful candidate to possess all the experiences, skills, and attributes listed below, the right candidate will likely rely on several of these skillsets to be successful in this role. If you are unsure whether or not you meet all of the qualifications but believe that your experience, skill set, growth mindset, and hard work ethic make you a good match for this position, we encourage you to apply!

  • Degree in business, finance, real estate, related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing large-scale renewable energy projects or successful development of 10 commercial solar projects is highly preferred.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial company.
  • A strong candidate will demonstrate drive and initiative, curiosity, and transparency throughout their engagement with landowners.
  • Ability and interest to learn and master new material, as required, and speak confidently on it.
  • A collaborative and engaging team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at various stages simultaneously.
  • Interest in understanding the full business model and project development cycle.
  • Creative thinking and problem solving skills that may identify new or improved strategies.
  • Able to multitask, take initiative, and absorb information quickly.
  • Must be able to problem solve and find creative solutions collaboratively and individually.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Results-driven and organized with a strong work ethic and commitment. Track progress (KPIs), report results, and actively work with team members to resolve any bottlenecks or problems.
