Job Description
A technologist position is available in NRELs Materials, Chemical and Computational Science Directorate on industrialization efforts in metal halide perovskite photovoltaic technologies including tandems.

This position will focus on use of scalable deposition techniques that ensure commercial relevance and enable integration of multiple subcells into tandem device stacks. Day to day duties include working with staff fabricating thin-film perovskite-based solar cells, interlayers and their integration via scalable deposition techniques (e.g., blade coating, bar coating, or slot-die coating) as well as critical electronic, structural and chemical characterization. Given the applications targets work will also include efforts relevant to large area perovskite-based solar cells and/or mini-modules, and associated manufacturing considerations (e.g. yield, reproducibility, defect density).

The technologist will work on a team but will be expected to perform a variety of duties:
  • Operate tools and deposit and characterize thin films for use in photovoltaic devices and photoelectrodes.
  • Large area perovskite-based device and module fabrication.
  • Help keep the lab running smoothly and efficiently, for example by performing some maintenance tasks and coordinating with other researchers.
  • Use observation, experience, and interpretation of in-line process diagnostics to maintain high process quality standards for consistency, quality, and repeatability.
  • Perform various semiconductor characterization techniques, including optical microscopy and measurements of electronic properties.
  • Input data into computer databases.

The collaborative environment requires a candidate who can interface with researchers of different disciplines and learn topics outside their area of expertise. Candidates will be expected to communicate their results to internal stakeholders. While opportunities for more traditional journal publications, conference presentations are anticipated, these are a lower priority in the context of these activities. The candidate will be required to work closely with the Environment, Health, & Safety team to follow safe work procedures, as well as to handle waste properly and keep a clean, well-organized work environment

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor’s Degree . Limited use and application of scientific principles, theories and concepts. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience (1) perovskite thin film coating using scalable deposition techniques, (2) thin-film photovoltaic module fabrication using laser and/or mechanic scribing techniques, (3) thin film deposition of metal and/or transparent conducting oxides, (4) semiconductor processing, and (5) Glovebox operation.
  • Ability to collaborate with researchers of different disciplines and learn topics outside their area of expertise.
  • Strong safety record and ability to follow complex standard operating procedures.
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with slot-die coating, vapor phase perovskite materials and devices.
  • Experience with device modelling, process development and documentation – eg. a mix of statistical data analysis, ML, or python coding.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Research Technologist I / Annual Salary Range: $55,400 – $91,400

Job Profile: Research Technologist II / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 – $104,900
