Job Description
NRELs Communications Office has an opening in the Employee and Operations Communications Section for an experienced publication editor who will lead the development of a bi-annual print publication for NREL employees and support other internal communication strategies and tools.
In this role, you will work closely with NRELs corporate communications group, including writers, editors, designers, and photographers to develop this new publication from concept to print with minimal supervision. You will also work directly with local community college journalism professors to assign, review, and publish articles written by college students in upper division journalism courses that fit with NRELs publication theme.
Publication responsibilities:
  • Establish publication criteria, including story length, photo and caption standards, reviews, and approvals.
  • Manage complex and editing and proofreading of various content types through final versions, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Ensure all materials meet high standards of quality and consistency.
  • Delegate, review, and provide feedback on the work of others.
  • Manage budget and track costs; provide status updates to corporate communications management.
Other responsibilities may include:
  • Co-manager of NRELs digital sign platform, including content strategy and staff training
  • Backup editor and writer for NRELs Headlines stories published on NRELs intranet, as needed.
Primary Job Functions
Editing: Proofread and edit nontechnical content for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Ensure adherence to style guides and editorial guidelines. Provide detailed feedback and guidance to authors to enhance content quality. Maintain records of revisions and feedback.
Content: Help format and prepare content for publication. Work with web team to publish online version of publication on NRELs intranet. Write articles for print publication and NRELs internal online feature stories, as needed. Co-lead NRELs digital sign strategy and publish content.
Collaboration: Work with corporate communications colleagues to plan and develop publication themes for future issues. Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and clients. Mentor junior staff.
Project management: Ensure stories and publications are completed on time and within the established scope and budget

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and quality
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities, with the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Strong command of editorial standards and style guides (e.g., Associated Press, Modern Language Association, Chicago Manual of Style)
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in managing a project from start to finish, including using project management tools (e.g., Asana, Click Up, internal NREL tools, etc.)
  • Ability to develop an accurate cost estimate for editing
  • Advanced knowledge of communications principles and practices
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to learn, follow, and recommend improvements to established processes, guidelines, and standards
  • Demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive attitude toward professional development
  • Ability to ensure technical information is distilled into understandable and engaging content (strong grasp of editing for plain language)

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 – $120,800

NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
