Job Description

Head of Engineering

Vulcan Elements is onshoring the manufacturing of rare-earth permanent magnets with a fully domestic supply chain and focus on decarbonization, servicing customers in critical industries such as defense, aerospace, and automotive. As Head of Engineering, you will both individually contribute to and lead a group of materials, magnetics, and process engineers with overall responsibility for magnetic material development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead overall development of equipment, processes, and compositions capable of required magnet performance and quality based on customer need
  • Oversee equipment selection & commissioning, including custom equipment engineering, modifications, and supporting facility infrastructure work
  • Oversee & contribute to development of the entire magnet manufacturing process, including development of innovative methods of manufacturing
  • Oversee internal materials and magnetics test & characterization work and outside laboratory contracting to characterize resulting materials
  • Lead strategic equipment supplier development to collaboratively improve next generation equipment for commercial scale production.
  • Build a team of innovative, action oriented materials and magnetics engineers to push the boundaries of permanent magnet material systems

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelors Degree, preferred Masters Degree, in Materials Engineering, Magnetics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering/science discipline
  • Experience developing rare-earth permanent magnet materials and/or rare-earth metals
  • Demonstrated experience with materials & magnetics characterization tools
  • Experience optimizing both manufacturing processes and material compositions to achieve desired outcomes in pilot or commercial scale environments
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an innovative, fast-paced engineering role
