Job Location: Hershey, PA Note: Hershey, PA is preferred but we are able to accommodate remote work. Job Summary: The Carbon Accounting Manager will play a critical role as part of the company’s Global Sustainability Team. The Carbon Accounting Manager will lead the Hershey company’s approach to measuring its GHG footprint including data collection , analysis, forecasting, assurance, target tracking and internal/external reporting.

The Carbon Accounting Manager will lead, maintain and continuously improve all GHG accounting processes. The major responsibilities are leading the company’s Scope 1+2+3 (FLAG and Non-FLAG) GHG inventory processes and reporting cycles; and managing the tracking of progress against our existing and any future SBTi public targets , our relationship with SBTi, and supporting decarbonization roadmap data analysis.

The Carbon Accounting Manager will be responsible for GHG data reporting, process, controls and continuous improvement. They will be responsible for ensuring that all GHG data and disclosures align with internal data collection and control requirements, and will identify and drive system improvements.

The role will also require interaction with other divisions of the business, including but not limited to procurement, R&D, manufacturing, and commercial facing functions, as part of the company’s ongoing advancements in internal capability. There will be requirements to deliver ad hoc life cycle analysis.

Role Responsibilities:

  • GHG Accounting
  • Lead the company’s Scope 1+2+3 (FLAG and Non-FLAG) GHG inventory processes.
  • Manage tracking against SBTi targets, our relationship with SBTi, and support decarbonization roadmap data analysis including helping plan and manage future targets.
  • Lead and coordinate across the enterprise to collect and QA/QC scope 1-3 input data.
  • Maintain data sources and adapt the inventory to carbon footprint methodology changes year over year.
  • Working with others as part of our supplier engagement strategy, establish supplier-specific emission factors from value chain partners by enhancing data collection. Identify opportunities to improve emissions factors analysis.
  • Responsible for determining coverage of renewable and zero emissions energy coverage on an annual basis and strategic basis.
  • Reporting, Process, Controls, and Continuous Improvements
    • Maintain our centralized emissions database, coordinate data collection activities, generate performance reports, and prepare audit materials. Identify and drive systems improvements (e.g. Inventory Management Plan).
    • Drive annual performance forecasting and modeling across Scopes 1+2+3, support performance reviews and provide insights needed to support business decision-making.
    • Lead GHG related contributions to non-financial disclosures including supporting growing assurance requirements. Ensure GHG data and disclosures align with internal data collection and control requirements.
    • Perform regular research and expand emissions data requirements based on evolving regulations, frameworks, standards, ratings and stakeholder trends (customers, investors, peers etc).
    • As part of a wider sustainability reporting program, participate with internal regional teams to evaluate, standardize, and continuously improve our environmental sustainability reporting policies, procedures, documentation and systems as part of our holistic data management strategy. This involves managing and optimizing company emissions dashboard, further systems integration and automated reporting, and future evolutions including supporting the specification and implementation of a carbon accounting software in 2024/5.
    • Develop trainings for new tools e.g. carbon accounting software.
  • Business Integration and Others
    • Responsible for ad hoc life cycle analysis including developing tools and upskilling the business towards independent running of LCA analysis.
    • Alongside the wider team, provide the climate data required in ESG reports, frameworks, surveys, customer requests (e.g., CDP, Project Gigaton, ISSB, DJSI).
    • Whilst the Sustainability team at Hershey continues to grow and evolve, there may be ad hoc requirements to cover data reporting of other environmental KPIs such as water and waste.

    Desired Skills & Experience:

    • Have substantial experience in carbon management / GHG inventory and developing scope 1, 2, and 3 emission calculations, target setting, and reduction roadmaps.
    • Have experience in analyzing energy usage and complex data, setting up and advising clients on emission inventories, and renewable energy data management.
    • Prior working experience preferably with a CPG or agriculture company; or more broadly experience working with supply chains, and an interest in sustainable food systems and agriculture and the key issues and dynamics within that industry.
    • A solid and current understanding of emissions, energy and carbon-related standards/ metrics/frameworks specifically GHG Protocol, ISO 14040/44/64/67, PEF, Science-Based Targets. Familiarity with mandatory environmental frameworks and sustainability disclosures would be beneficial.
    • Experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and ability to interpret data and provide useful insights and recommendations for impact reductions.
    • Strong quantitative and analytical skills required, including modeling, forecasting, and ability to create clear findings and identify trends from large data sets.
    • Highly proficient in MS Excel, and preferably with experience in Power BI and carbon accounting tools/platforms.
    • Ability to conduct data analysis to identify trends, spot errors and bring forth opportunities for improvements.
    • Strategic mindset – able to bring forth multiple considerations for strategy development, work effectively seeking input business partners, and good project management skills.
    • Nuanced understanding of sustainability with the skill to navigate complex reporting requirements.
    • Have good knowledge of industry best practice and technical developments, certifications, international sustainability standards and sustainability management systems relating to carbon reporting and environmental sustainability.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a sustainability, accounting, finance or other applicable field.
    • A senior carbon accounting specialist with experience leading corporate carbon accounting, with a minimum of 5 but preferably 8-10 years of experience.
