The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead the internal PV & Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) electrical engineering process for projects at a large Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) firm. This role includes oversight of electrical design and studies, consideration of field construction and installation methods, design development & cost optimization, design of DC, MVAC, and LVAC systems, and mentorship of junior team members.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop preliminary and detailed designs for PV and BESS projects based on engineering principles.
- Improve electrical engineering tools to determine cable, conduit, OCPD, and equipment ratings.
- Support the Estimating team with design concepts and BOM optimization.
- Guide CAD designers in creating site layouts and single line diagrams.
- Maintain and update the database for PV and BESS equipment.
- Develop construction details and Bill of Material for project work packages.
- Review utility interconnection documents and ensure project design compliance.
- Provide design inputs to the PV Performance group for accurate production models.
- Apply innovative engineering principles for cost optimization and maintain design matrices.
- Support the Procurement team and Project Engineers on product compatibility and equipment ratings.
- Attend training on new products, installation methods, and safety protocols.
- Develop expertise with modules, racking, inverters, batteries, DC-DC converters, BMS, EMS technologies, MV Switchgear, and Transformers.
- Review EOR drawings to control project costs.
- Mentor Electrical Engineers, Design Leads, Project Engineers, and CAD Designers.
Education & Experience:
- BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in Solar PV Design or Solar construction.
- 5+ years in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Energy.
- Experience with Utility PV Contract negotiation in EPC.
- Professional Engineering License preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Proficient in AutoCAD, ETAP, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with SAM, Cymcap, DIgSILENT, and WinIGS is a plus.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, SLDs, and specifications.
- Understand manufacturer’s design parameters and installation guidelines.
- Create PV site plans and single line drawings.
- Prioritize, multitask, and follow through on tasks with minimal supervision.
