Job Description What you will do The Senior Project Engineer supports and takes a lead role in the qualification, development, engineering construction, and commissioning and startup phases of wastewater and/or bioenergy projects. Under general direction of the Wastewater & Bioenergy team, within Sustainable Infrastructure, the Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist will contribute as a member of the project development team and is responsible for providing technical engineering support to secure capital projects through infrastructure-as-a-service projects, P3 delivery methods, design-build contracts, and performance contracts. This role supports and manages every step from proposal development through project execution. The Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist functions as the primary technical expert and development resource, which includes vetting of project feasibility, managing the design development, overseeing the engineering process and detailed designs, setting quality controls around specifications and drawings, assisting operations leaders with construction contract writing and design questions during construction, providing technical support to the sales and local engineering team, developing project business cases and cost estimates, and conveying technical presentations to customers. A strong understanding of wastewater, digester gas, and landfill gas opportunities is . In addition, the Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist will also assist in utility interconnection coordination, seeking incentives, identifying biogas monetization strategies, and maintaining a key network of partners in engineering firms, manufacturing firms, professional associations, and other necessary ecosystem players.

Engineering

How you will do it

  • Execute preliminary evaluations to determine the technical and economic viability of wastewater and bioenergy opportunities. Perform technical evaluations to estimate project size and revenues, support sales teams to present solutions.
  • Prepare technical responses to proposals, including quantitative vetting of improvement opportunities and written descriptions.
  • Prepare technical scope and project fees for development contracts with Customers and for development contracts with subconsultants.
  • Support project development, including engineering and design, construction, procurement, and post-installation services. This includes:
  • Prepare conceptual engineering diagrams, scopes of work, and equipment selections to execute on wastewater opportunities identified in preliminary evaluations.
  • When using third-party firms in design developments, oversee and manage engineering– including writing engineering work orders, holding regular progress meetings to stay involved in the process, and actively managing the firms to make sure the engineering product matches the JCI intent.
  • Review engineering design documents, including drawings and specifications, throughout design to confirm that the project objectives are being met.
  • Support internal teams by providing technical support on specification review, progress tracking, and working in an integration role for various technical disciplines.
  • Work with the team to identify opportunities to streamline the engineering process. Develop QA/QC plans to standardize the development and construction management process.
  • Discuss and resolve technical issues with project stakeholders, including engineers, procurement and construction teams, and design development managers.
  • Provide troubleshooting for systems during construction or in post-installation, as needed based on project specifics.
  • Represent the bioenergy engineering team as technical subject matter expert on external calls with clients, third party engineers, and suppliers.
  • Business Development

    • Formulate, revise, and track target lists for bioenergy opportunities. Work with regional sales & Account Executives on pursuits within their jurisdiction.
    • Maintain network with energy utilities and environmental attributes brokerage firms for bioenergy projects.
    • Collaborate with engineering team members in decision-making with clients, procurement and internal leadership on technical items that inform commercial design decisions and internal design risk management.
    • Participate in industry trade shows and maintain an active role in the American Biogas Council, Water Environment Federation, and/or other organizations that support JCI industry involvement. Maintain committee participation and deliver technical presentations.

    Travel: Travel to support preliminary evaluations, customer meetings and business case presentations, etc. Travel up to 30%.

    General

    • Contribute to company-wide initiatives to drive continual improvements in efficiency, tools, processes, and execution.
    • Initiate and lead continuous improvement efforts for the Wastewater & Bioenergy team, including leading tool development, process refinement, and lessons learned activities.
    • Support company-wide safety measures and incorporate safety principles into project design.

    Advanced Level Of Knowledge In

    • Digester gas- and landfill gas-to-energy solutions. Wastewater treatment engineering experience and the ability to evaluate new technologies, including advanced biosolids processing and secondary treatment systems .
    • Data analysis, spreadsheets, and design calculations.
    • Traditional and Alternative Project Delivery Methods, including Scheduling Concepts, Bidding Process, Equipment Specifications, and Drawing Reviews
    • MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)

    What We Look For

    Bachelor’s degree in civil / environmental engineering, or related wastewater field with two to five years’ experience in wastewater and energy projects (biosolids, biogas-to-energy, and renewable natural gas experience ). Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly . Knowledge about regulations for the design of renewable energies, waste treatment, and biogas plants is . Proficiency in biogas and landfill gas treatment process design and operations required. An understanding and knowledge of planning, development, design, and construction related to resource recovery including biosolids, reclaimed water, and biogas desired, including utility interconnections, aeration and pump system design, and solids handling scopes of work. Strong entrepreneurial interest and experience engaging clients to identify and win new projects. Exceptional critical thinking skills. Strong technical and professional writing skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including experience conveying technical presentations to clients and regulators. Valid driving license.
