Job Description Idaho Laboratory is hiring a Technical Relationships & Program Development Consultantto work in our Automation, Instrumentation & Controls Department. Our team works a 9×80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the Automation, Instrumentation & Controls Department Manager. You will support INL’s R&D efforts directed at introducing digital technologies (e.g., instrumentation, control, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics) for use in the commercial nuclear power sector to facilitate the transformation from a highly labor-centric to a digital-centric approach to plant operation. The Department of Automation, Instrumentation, and Controls at INL applies expertise in instrumentation, control systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and business process innovation to solve nuclear industry challenges related to control of advanced reactors including remote and autonomous operation; digitalization and modernization of the existing nuclear fleet; and nuclear industry sustainability and economic competitiveness. The department has a diverse staff with cross-disciplinary research skills and nuclear industry experience. Responsibilities Include:
  • Help coordinate R&D efforts with the plans and activities of owner-operators, vendors and suppliers, other research organizations, and responsible regulatory organizations.
  • Initiate and manage interactions with commercial organizations, including development of non-disclosure agreements and cooperative research and development agreements, to support the development and deployment of digital technologies to the commercial sector or to support individual R&D efforts.
  • Represent INL in interactions with collaborators/partners and industry organizations such as Nuclear Energy Institute, Electric Power Research Institute, and IAEA.
  • Interact with the NRC on licensing and regulatory issues related to plant digital upgrades and innovations.
  • Represent INL at professional and technical meetings.
  • Be a principal investigator on multiple projects or tasks, including being responsible for the overall technical approach, execution, preparation of and management of budgets and all necessary resources to accomplish work.
  • Support the execution of the DOE Light Water Reactor Sustainability program in its mission to help sustain the long-term operation of the nation’s fleet of commercial nuclear energy facilities.
  • Identify needed digital technology R&D to benefit advanced reactor and small modular reactor concepts.
  • Develop intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights, and patents, and facilitating technology transfer.
  • Mentor junior staff, post-docs, and interns in activities related to this role

Qualifications: Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field and 10 years of experience in the nuclear industry. Demonstrated leadership and management experience.
  • Experience with technical and regulatory barriers to the application of digital technologies in nuclear power plants. Broad nuclear industry contacts and working relationships, inclusive of memberships in major /international organizations.

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level #3 ($109,260.00 – $223,908.00) / Level #4 ($130,980.00 – $268,680.00). At Idaho Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
