Job Summary:

Sr. Electrical Engineers at Columbia Power Technologies, Inc. (C-Power) work on a multi-disciplinary Engineering team with the objective of delivering electrical engineering expertise to the commercialization of ocean energy innovations. They are responsible for improving and hardening designs for build/manufacturing, while continuing to innovate and keep up with the fast pace of the renewable energy industry. They drive engineering excellence for the Electrical Engineering Team through direct, hands-on contributions in addition to reviewing and providing feedback on the work of junior Engineers. This role reports to the Electrical Engineering Team Lead.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Electrical design of pulsed power conversion systems, power electronics, and electrical instrumentation
  • Effective communication and coordination of contractors employed during design work
  • Design of components, material sourcing, technical documentation
  • Focus on commercialization through improved part and component sourcing, quality control, accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) and engineering change management
  • Work collaboratively in a team, improve workflows, set design standards in accordance with best practices, and ensure quality completion of assigned work
  • Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Hands-on electrical design that meets system, regulatory, and DFMA requirements
  • Guidance and review of electrical design for all team members
  • Perform and/or monitor V&V testing of electrical and control equipment and systems
  • Maintenance and repair of prototype electrical equipment, generators, power electronics, energy storage systems, and associated cabling
  • Support engineering team in hands on construction, assembly, test, deployment, and troubleshooting of wave power systems
  • Protects operations by keeping proprietary information confidential.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of state-of-the-art power electronic design topologies, including but not limited to switch-mode power supplies, power inverters, digital and analog circuits.
  • High level understanding of mechanical systems and methods of electro-mechanical energy conversion.
  • Attention to detail when it comes to schematics and BOMs
  • Exceptional communication and time management skills
  • Proactive, process, and task-oriented abilities
  • Proficient with MATLAB and circuit simulation tools
  • Ability to work with others as a part of a larger engineering team
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment
  • Skilled at presenting complex technical information to other disciplines, management, and other stakeholders

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering may be preferred; BS Electrical Engineering required
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Experience designing power electronics
  • Electrical grid connection component design & integration experience is preferred
  • Electric machine experience is preferred
  • Experience using MATLAB is a plus
  • Experience designing power converters and inverter circuits

Physical Requirements:

  • The work is generally performed in an office environment. On average, expect: 50% office work, 30% laboratory work, 20% domestic and international travel field work
  • Physical demands include sitting, keyboarding, verbal communication, written communication, working with hand tools, lifting parts and equipment, use of both hands.
  • Employees are occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to travel, domestically and overseas, as needed
