QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must have a high school diploma or GED; must be able to successfully complete the Companys Utility Splicer training program. Applicant must have the ability to read, understand and execute written or verbal orders. Previous experience in underground and or overhead construction and maintenance work is required. A basic understanding of basic electricity and electrical circuits, including the ability to read and interpret power system elementary diagrams is required. The applicant must pass the EEI Construction & Skilled Trades (CAST) test and the Lines Physical Abilities Test (PAT). In addition, must be willing to work from any of the Companys operating centers, in inclement weather or emergencies and meet service commitments. Other general qualifications such as physical fitness, attendance, safety and performance records will be considered.

It is also required that applicants be willing to climb wood poles and have climbing work experience or have successfully completed climbing training. Applicants must be willing to work on and around both high and low voltage circuits. Must meet standards for and complete requirements for a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) as defined by the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986. Must know and comply with all Company safety and health policies and procedures applicable to work performance. Other general qualifications such as physical fitness, attendance, safety and performance records will be considered.

Additional consideration will be given for the following job-related experience or training:

1. Overhead lines work experience;

2. Successfully completed courses or training in basic electricity and electrical circuits;

3. Experience in switching of high and low voltage power circuits; and

4. Any other qualifications contributing to the applicants ability to perform the job.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Performs skilled work necessary to the installation, splicing, connecting, testing, inspecting, and maintenance of power cables, transformers, switchgear, overhead and underground control cables, street light cables and similar equipment of all voltage classes.
  • Installation and removal of cable, splicing, connecting, disconnecting and inspecting live cables operating above and below 500 volts in underground, substation and network locations; providing safe clearance through the proper use of protective equipment; Splicing and terminating deenergized cables of all voltage classes, connecting associated electrical apparatus, assembling joints, elbows, and potheads in accordance with manufacturer’s design specifications, procedures, dimensions, temperatures, and materials;
  • Performing switching operations in underground, overhead, substation, and network locations , positively identifying cables, determining safe working conditions and clearances by means of electrical tests, safety grounding and visual inspection; determining proper phasing and making connections accordingly; keeping circuit identification and phase tags current at all locations;
  • Inspecting, installing, and removing underground equipment and facilities; installing cable racks, racking cables in manholes; bonding cable sheaths and installing fireproofing materials;
  • Working above ground from insulated aerial devices or wood poles positively identifying overhead and underground primary and secondary circuits, installing or removing cutouts, arresters, hot taps, potheads, risers and/or other similar equipment including connecting or disconnecting jumpers to energized overhead lines;
  • Performing all necessary work relative to general and emergency maintenance on all underground cable locations, and associated equipment such as proof test, cable fault locating, ground resistance testing, and load and voltage surveys , using appropriate test equipment and methods;
  • Driving assigned vehicles, requisitioning materials, keeping truck equipped writing daily reports. Keeping Company property, work equipment, materials and job sites in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performing all necessary work relative to emergency maintenance on all overhead locations, and associated equipment such as, walking out overhead fused leads, patrolling mainline overhead circuits, Act as grounding crew, Service connections using appropriate test equipment and methods;
  • In addition to the primary duties listed above, the employee may be called upon to perform other work such as training duties to associated personnel as needed as circumstances require.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Outdoor work required in various types of weather.
