Job Summary:

Do you enjoy teaching and working with undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines? Are you interested in supporting learners in finding, evaluating, and using library resources in a discipline? Do you enjoy planning and developing outreach and programming for students and campus partners?

The Instructional Services Librarian position, located in the UW-Madison Libraries’ Teaching & Learning Programs office, collaborates with library instruction staff to develop and teach information literacy instruction sessions primarily for upper level undergraduate general education courses in the discipline. This position also leads outreach for the Teaching & Learning Programs office and partners with other library outreach staff to plan and support collaborative events for students and campus partners. In addition, this position contributes to the assessment and evaluation of library instruction and student learning, including the creation of documentation and best practices for the Libraries’ instruction program.

This is an entry-level position. Candidates with demonstrated interest in instruction and outreach are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be provided with professional development, training, and mentoring to support their growth in these areas.

Responsibilities:

Provides a wide variety of professional library services which may include the areas of teaching, learning, public services, circulation, reference, selection, and outreach to support creative exploration, intellectual growth and, scholarly pursuits. Provides input on policies and procedures to contribute to services and operations and assist in continual service improvement and innovation.

  • 5% Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
  • 5% Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with vendors and professional colleagues
  • 5% Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions particularly related to situations that are complex in nature
  • 40% Designs, develops, and delivers instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
  • 15% Assists with the coordination of day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
  • 10% Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area
  • 5% Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
  • 5% Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state levels
  • 10% Develops outreach programs and services to connect library users to the organization.

Tasks:

  • Provides significant instructional services for undergraduate general education Communication-B courses by designing, developing, and delivering library instruction in a variety of formats.
  • Participates actively on library committees related to instruction and areas of interest.
  • Collaborates on assessment and evaluation of library instruction, primarily for general education Communication-B courses.
  • Develops outreach and collaborative programming for the UW-Madison Libraries, primarily for Teaching & Learning Programs
  • Keeps current with developments in pedagogy and librarianship through engagement in professional organizations and professional development.
  • Uses strong written and verbal communication skills to facilitate successful project management.

Education:

Required:
Master’s Degree (Library & Information Science, Education, or related field) or equivalent certification or years of experience in a similar role

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively lead classes or groups

  • Demonstrated interest or experience with program assessment or evaluation

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Typical work hours (M-F). Hybrid. Expected onsite minimum 20%, with onsite instruction responsibilities a priority.
