Job Description

We are seeking a Chief Engineer to oversee Battery Management Systems (BMS) & Battery Packs within our Energy Storage Center of Excellence (CoE).

Responsibilities include:

  • Converting application needs into detailed specifications for battery BMS, packs/racks/systems, covering aspects like electrical, mechanical, thermal, environmental, durability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluating battery vendor specifications (e.g., cells and modules).
  • Leading technical evaluations for BMS and Battery Packs.
  • Heading up FMEA for battery platforms, as well as design for manufacturability and assembly assessments.
  • Assisting global R&D teams with problem-solving and identifying underlying issues.
  • Crafting and refining test strategies and protocols for BMS and Battery Pack assessments as necessary.
  • Aiding Business Units in System Level evaluations (UPS, Storage) of Battery Packs.
  • Facilitating Business Units in the effective integration of battery platforms into final products.
  • Collaborating with global supply chains on vendor development and oversight.
  • Assisting quality teams with problem analysis and remedial actions.
  • Supporting manufacturing with the approval of alternative components.
  • This role may involve some domestic, and occasionally international travel.

Experience/Qualifications:

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a science
  • 15+ years’ experience in battery technology.
  • Over 5 years’ expertise with Lithium-based batteries (e.g., Lithium-Ion – NMC, LFP…).
  • Strong knowledge of BMS and Battery Pack engineering.
  • Familiarity with safety, compliance, and regulatory frameworks (UL1642, UL1973, UL9540, etc.).

Advantageous

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in engineering or science.
  • Comprehensive understanding of various battery technologies and their attributes.
  • Proven track record in setting specifications and criteria for battery modules and packs/racks.
  • Hands-on experience in designing battery modules and packs/racks alongside mechanical, thermal, electrical, firmware/software engineers, including testing.
  • Direct involvement in testing lithium battery cells, modules, packs/racks.
  • Background in battery product development from cell selection to UL certification processes.
  • Proficiency in project management and progress monitoring.
  • Experience navigating multicultural environments with international clients and colleagues.
  • Six Sigma design certification.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven analytical prowess along with strategic and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Problem-solving aptitude.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Creative thinking skills.
  • Systemic approach coupled with excellent teamwork abilities.
