Purpose:
BayWa r.e. Americas is seeking a Development Manager to join our Development team. This position would work in the Development department and requires managing between 4-6, utility-scale, battery and/or solar projects and their development activities using cloud-based project management, GIS, document management databases and reporting tools. The Development Manager will also support the regional Development Director for strategic planning, reporting, and analysis. Projects may be located across multiple states and will generally have between a 36–60-month development cycle.

A successful candidate will demonstrate sound industry and project development knowledge, superior leadership and communication skills, the ability to focus on details while still seeing the big picture, strong organizational skills, a desire to solve complex problems, initiative, a results-oriented approach, and an excellent ability to work with others across multiple teams.

This position is required to be in the Eastern Time Zone. Preferred in New York state, fully remote, or in Charlottesville, VA for a hybrid remote/office setup.

Responsibilities we will trust you with:

Success in this role involves: • Leading, managing, and coordinating all development activities including but not limited to: site acquisition, real estate and title curative, interconnection, regulatory approvals, engineering, land use and environmental permitting, and financial valuation, by working with internal teams, external consultants, and local stakeholders. • Demonstrating and ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills within the multi-disciplinary project team. • Profit and loss responsibility for the project from site acquisition to handoff to execution team, including creating and presenting Requests for Investment to company management. • Supporting the creation of the development strategy and executing on that strategy to achieve project milestones on time and on budget in order for projects to successfully move into financing and construction. • Gathering market intelligence and expanding relationships with local government, utility, and other stakeholder groups to understand the project development and permitting processes. • Managing the local permitting process including pre-application coordination with local officials, community engagement, application preparation and submission, public hearing presentations, and following through compliance with permit conditions. • Managing preliminary project valuation modeling with support from project finance team to understand all inputs and sensitivities of the valuation. • Identifying and reporting risks to project success and working with internal and external parties to establish mitigation plans to maintain project schedules and budgets. • Building and maintaining positive relationships with landowners, development partners, authorities having jurisdiction, utilities, and other project stakeholders. • Reviewing and managing project contracts including leases, interconnection agreements, and power purchase agreements to ensure compliance with their terms. • Regularly traveling to project sites (25-50% of time).

Your areas of knowledge and expertise: • At least 3+ years of direct project development experience, 4+ years preferred; • 5+ years of professional experience in renewable energy industry • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Energy, real estate, engineering, or business related) preferred. • Ability to formulate and recommend decisions with limited information. • Project management, organizational, and analytical problem-solving skills. • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and influencing skills. • Results driven and solutions oriented.
