The Senior Solar Site Manager will oversee personnel and activities to meet CLIENT Renewables Utility Scale Solar O&M contractual obligations during the pre-commercial and commercial phases of a large utility-scale solar photovoltaic site(s). The manager ensures the site meets all uptime and availability requirements and acts as a decision-making contact between the Client Manager, facility personnel, and CLIENT Renewables.

The Senior Solar Site Manager supervises on-site activities by CLIENT field personnel, and subcontractors to maintain safety and technical standards. They assist in developing and executing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures and assess compliance with corporate policies to ensure station performance meets CLIENT Renewables standards.

Description

The 1,276.4 MW DC Westland’s Solar Complex in Lemoore, CA, consists of seven solar and battery storage sites. The complex also includes a total capacity of 360 MW DC in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and is connected by a 230 kV Westland Transmission line, enhancing the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.

This Senior Solar Site Manager reports directly to the CLIENT Renewables Vice President of Asset optimization & Management.

This hands-on position involves active participation in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.

Primary Duties:

  • Ensure that safe work practices are followed and enforced, including the use of proper PPE and safety equipment by all CLIENT and 3rd party on-site personnel.
  • Complete all safety incident reports and submit them to the Client Manager and the Vice President of Asset Optimization & Management.
  • Provide detailed oversight of the project(s) to ensure the successful operation and maintenance of the facility.
  • Develop an annual PM plan and schedule to meet contractual and manufacturer requirements.
  • Manage preventative maintenance to complete all activities on time and within the approved budget and in accordance with OEM requirements.
  • Oversee corrective maintenance activities to meet or exceed site availability guarantees.
  • Maintain all site documentation and reporting and assist with failure root-cause analyses.
  • Perform all site activities in accordance with environmental permits, equipment warranty requirements, training plans, tool and spare parts lists, and milestone schedules.
  • Identify and implement appropriate actions, evaluate their effectiveness, and follow up to ensure that objectives are met.
  • Document all on-site activities, including preventative maintenance data and results, corrective maintenance data and results, usage of spare parts, usage of consumables, site conditions, equipment availability, and any other reporting deemed necessary by the Client Manager and Customer.
  • Actively participate in the completion of both preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Provide training and mentoring to assigned technicians.
  • Offer technical guidance and second-level technical support to field personnel.
  • Assist with technician interviews and hiring decisions.
  • Review, adjust as necessary, and approve technician timesheets and job expenses.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews for assigned technicians.
  • Utilize CLIENT procedures to implement and document formal performance improvement plans for underperforming technicians.
  • Ensure that all vehicles, tools, and equipment assigned by CLIENT to the site are properly maintained, stored, and used productively for assigned work.
  • Ensure compliance with all projects permits and support both corporate and external activities associated with permit compliance.
  • Identify the need for outside support (corporate or contractors) for required site work not performed by site personnel. Oversee all on-site work to ensure compliance with site safety and quality requirements.
  • Utilize CLIENT procurement procedures and an assigned credit card procedures to procure materials and supplies necessary for the proper maintenance of the site(s).
  • Enforce and comply with departmental procedures and reporting requirements.
  • Manage equipment warranty claims.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

All CLIENT managers and supervisors have a direct and important role in ensuring that all work is performed in a healthy and safe manner. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each Supervisor’s performance. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:

  • Conduct/Support Regular Safety Meetings (at least monthly).
  • Address Safety at all Group Meetings.
  • Conduct Inspections and Observations: establish within the department a regular inspection of the work area and a safety observation process of work being performed.
  • Establish and lead these activities following any rules, requirements or guidance established in your business unit, group, or division.
  • Involve all CLIENT teammates in the activities.
  • Analyze result, write work orders, train, and educate to eliminate hazards, at-risk behavior and meet company regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct Regular Observation Tours: Conduct no less than two safety observation tours of high-risk activities e.g., confined space to verify that employees are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations.
  • Regular and Frequent Contacts: conduct one-on-one contact sessions with workers to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations and coach safe behaviors, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment.
  • Respond to Incidents: respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to injuries, incidents and near misses; write a report that explains what happened, identify the cause, and recommend corrective action following any established business unit or division practice. Follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken.
  • Working Relationships.

Job Qualifications:

  • An Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Renewables, Engineering, or a related field is highly valued, showcasing the technical expertise necessary for a comprehensive understanding of solar projects.
  • Extensive advanced level experience in solar photovoltaic plant operations, maintenance, and/or construction, including operating and maintaining medium and high voltage power systems and substations.
  • A high level of supervision or management experience is required.
  • Experience in testing, analyzing, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing issues in photovoltaic inverter systems and monitoring (DAS) systems, as well as other components of PV power plants.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of solar industry best practices, NEC requirements, and diagnosis/repair of common solar failures, determine root cause analysis of failures with the ability to communicate them to assigned technicians.
  • Management experience in technical areas and experience in coordinating multiple activities and tasks across various disciplines is desired.
  • Experience working as a third-party O&M (service) provider is desired.
  • Highly proficient in MS Word and Excel.

Additional skills ideal for this position include the ability to:

  • Possess or can obtain a California Electrical Contractor’s License (preferred).
  • Be well-organized and self-motivated, able to complete assignments and tasks within deadlines.
  • Solve practical problems, clearly communicate tasks and needs, train other personnel, and analyze data to make sound professional judgments and recommendations.
  • Understand and interpret business financial drivers.
  • Excellent attention to detail, verbal, and written communication, as well as analytical/quantitative skills.
  • Always possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Work Schedule:

  • This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours.
  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.
  • “On call” status will periodically be required. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.
