Job Summary:

The Veteran Services Coordinator is an important member of University Veteran Services (UVS), which provides services and support for nearly 2,000 military-connected students. The military-connected student community at UW-Madison is comprised of US military veterans, currently serving national guard and reservists, and their immediate family members. Military-connected students can be found across all levels of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. UVS helps students transition to campus life and find success through administering and advising on education benefits, community building programs, and campus and community advocacy. UVS is part of Student Affairs’ Identity and Inclusion efforts and prioritizes supporting students to build a sense of belonging and flourish.

The Veteran Services Coordinator supports all functions related to the military-connected student experience. This role works directly with students on important topics such as veteran/military education benefits and connections to resources to foster student success and belonging, as well as coordinating with other units across campus to support students. An ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of expanding their own knowledge and skills to meet the unique needs of military-connected students.

The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative team of dedicated professionals. As a member of a team, the Veteran Services Coordinator must be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position will report to the Director of UVS. Certifying military-connected education benefits by following internal processes and procedures will be a central component of this role. Please note that the incumbent must be eligible to access the US Department of Veteran Affairs ‘Enrollment Manager’ system, which requires a Login.gov or ID.me account and verification using personal identity information.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Certify state and federal military-connected education benefits
  • Conduct meetings with students on potentially sensitive topics
  • Contribute to building a safe environment that encourages student success
  • Coordinate with core student services at UW-Madison, including but not limited to colleagues in the Bursar’s Office, Office of the Registrar, Office of Admissions and Recruitment, and the Office of Student Financial Aid

Responsibilities:

Develops and implements programs and services, maintains relationships with stakeholders, and represents the institution as a student military and veteran identity expert. Administers veteran and military benefits under federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines. Provides information to prospective students and assists students in their educational pursuits through connections to campus resources, advising, and community building. Educates and advocates for the needs of military connected students.

  • 65% Manages benefit eligibility, benefit advising, and accurate delivery of benefits for military connected individuals
  • 20% Provides students connections to campus resources, advising, and community building opportunities to foster student success and sense of belonging
  • 5% Contributes to the development, execution, and review of programs and services designed to meet unit objectives
  • 5% Advocates for military connected students in all aspects of campus life and promotes a campus philosophy of military and veteran identity inclusiveness
  • 5% Serves as a unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups, providing information and education on military connected students

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience working with processes, complex systems, and software
  • Experience in providing a positive customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with military and/or veterans
  • Experience as an Academic Advisor, collegiate career services, or other university/college student services role
  • Experience as a School Certifying Official

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite, non-campus work location upon supervisor and department/Student Affairs division approval.

Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $50,000.00 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
