Summary

The Transmission Manager will be the lead in supporting transmission and congestion related activities related to portfolio optimization, hedging, development, and M&A activity.

Position Description

  • Support JERAs Commercial Operations Trading Desks, performing transmission analyses to identify short- and long-term congestion risks and to assist with and devise bidding, hedging, and optimization strategies.
  • Lead analysis of anticipated future transmission topology, congestion, and power flows to identify and champion areas of focus for M&A and development efforts.
  • Optimize and participate in market bids and FTR congestion hedges and provide basis pricing for PJM, NYISO, ISONE, ERCOT and other energy markets.
  • Analyze large sets of data to quantify trading risk exposures and support decision-making related to congestion forecasts.
  • Utilize power flow and production cost-based simulation applications like Dayzer and PSS/E models to develop congestion outlooks and hedging strategies.
  • Create databases to evaluate historical market data, path and portfolio selection and portfolio risk management criteria.
  • Perform ATC calculations to determine the available transmission capacity at potential M&A and developmental locations.

Monitoring

  • Monitor variables that influence the pricing of transmission products, including FTRs, ARRs, CRRs and physical & financial basis transactions.
  • Follow ISOs and RTOs transmission meetings and have a solid understanding of the major planning projects. Identify the potential treats and opportunities associated with these projects.
  • Maintain understanding of marketplace rules and procedures, and their effects on transmission product value and trading strategies.

  • Understanding of electric markets and power portfolio management.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, results oriented, creative and innovative.
  • Must have the ability to create load flow cases and contingency analysis and interpret results. Must have knowledge of PSS/E, or PowerWorld.
  • Experience with the nodal production cost software such as DAYZER, UPLAN, or PROMOD and interpretation of their results.
  • Familiarity with any of PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE required. Also, knowledge of FERC rulings in any of these markets is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Solid understanding of the bulk power market strategies, pricing, hedging and power flow strategies on the transmission grid.
  • Specific knowledge of transmission operations as it relates to the pricing of transmission products in both the physical and financial markets.
  • Knowledge of and experience in modeling the electric grid to determine planning & operational transmission system limitations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of all transmission products, including FTRs, ARRs, CRRs, physical & financial basis products.
  • Extensive knowledge of trading tools and indices, marginal and average pricing, and physical movement of power through the electric grid, & financial transmission products.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree in engineering, economics, business, finance, or other relevant degree, or related field
  • 2 years FTR trading experience related transmission experience (higher degrees are preferred). Experience in a merchant environment would be beneficial.
  • 5 to 7 years experience in energy development or transmission planning.
  • 5 to 7 years energy industry experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Masters degree in a quantitative discipline, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or related field.
