Job Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES:
As the employee becomes qualified through acquired experience and training make all operating inspections, take periodic readings, and performs all required switching operations of the Substation Department including operation of reclosers and pole-type switches. Make minor adjustments, repairs, and replacements in connection with this work. In addition, keep equipment, buildings and grounds in a neat and orderly condition.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet the Company’s “General Requirements”; and, in addition:

  • Must have successfully completed the Substation Operator’s portion of the pre-employment test, except that an employee hired prior to May 1, 1983 who has or obtains a high school diploma or its equivalent, does not have to complete the pre-employment test.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and perform routine operations.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude. Must possess keen faculties of observation.
  • Must have the ability to learn:
    • The making of simple diagrams and sketches.
    • The principle of electricity and the purpose and functioning of substation apparatus.
    • To receive and execute orders with accuracy and dispatch.
    • The identification and use of materials, tools and equipment commonly used in the work.
  • Must have the ability to complete satisfactorily the Company courses in Fundamentals of Electricity – Direct Current and Alternating Current.
  • Must be able to qualify for an auto driver’s license to operate motor vehicles in State of New Jersey.
  • Must have the physical and mental characteristics necessary to be able to proceed quickly and safely from one assigned station to another under all conditions of traffic and weather.
  • Must be capable of operating any assigned station, customer’s substation, or pole type equipment.
  • Must know and understand the operating sequence of the automatic equipment and understand the difference in operation of the various stations.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the function and operation of the electrical and mechanical equipment in the stations in the area assigned.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose and promptly correct unusual operating difficulties whether present or not present at the time of the development of the difficulty.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of the Substation Operating Manual, including the safety rules and practices set forth in this manual; must have a thorough working knowledge of the procedures covering the ordering out, tagging, and releasing of circuits and equipment.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the functions of the transmission and distribution system and of the relationship of the various departments charged with their operation.
