The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and education organization supported by its members. The ULI Nashville District Council advances the mission of ULI at a local level. The ULI Nashville District Council was founded in 2008 and includes over 900 members across occupations related to real estate and land use. Beginning July 1, 2024, ULI Nashville will welcome ULI members from Chattanooga, Knoxville, and other communities in East Tennessee and will expand programming to Chattanooga and Knoxville.

As a member-led organization, ULIs strength lies in its members industry knowledge and expertise. Members advance ULIs mission, grow professionally, and benefit the Nashville, Middle Tennessee, and East Tennessee communities through ULI Nashville programming and serving on Committees, Action Councils, Affinity Groups, and Initiatives.
ULI Nashville is hiring full-time Strategic Initiatives Lead to lead its advocacy and education efforts in multi-modal transportation (mobility), infrastructure, building healthy places, public/private partnership, and Technical Assistance Panels/ Advisory Services Panels. While ULI does not lobby or endorse legislation or candidates, ULI does educate and advocate for best practices in the priority areas listed above.
ULI Nashville works remotely. The Strategic Initiatives Lead is required to travel to Middle Tennessee to attend in-person staff meetings, committee meetings, and to provide onsite support for events and other programming. Meetings, events, and programs may be in the early mornings or evenings.

POSITION SUMMARY:*
The Strategic Initiatives Lead is a professional position and an integral part of the ULI Nashville District Council team. The Strategic Initiatives Leadwill support the Executive Director and other staff in Nashville to ensure that the District Councils goals and objectives are met.
The Strategic Initiatives Lead leads advocacy and education efforts, focusing on three areas:
The Strategic Initiatives Lead also provides input on ULI Nashvilles budget and workplan, provides support to other ULI Nashville staff on large scale projects/events, and may be called upon to lead on smaller projects as opportunities present themselves throughout the year.
The Strategic Initiatives Lead is one of the faces of ULI Nashville members will call on the Strategic Initiatives Lead for assistance and information, so it is imperative that she or he be friendly, professional, and an informed resource about ULI. The Strategic Initiatives Lead must take initiative and responsibility and demonstrate meticulous attention to both details and deadlines. The Strategic Initiatives Lead must also have professional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with senior business and public sector executives. The ideal candidate will have a passion for real estate development and urban planning and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
The position necessitates the Strategic Initiatives Lead be able to travel occasionally to District Council events primarily in Nashville/Davidson County, but also in Middle Tennessee, and attend meetings, events or programs in the early mornings or evenings. Occasional travel to headquarters in Washington, D.C. and to annual member meetings is required.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:*
The Strategic Initiatives Leads overall responsibility is to manage education and advocacy efforts and to execute programming and events for the ULI Nashville District Council, including working closely with volunteer committee members.

Action Councils – *The Strategic Initiatives Lead will be the lead staff to three Action Councils member-led committees focused on the specific priority areas of multi-modal transportation (the Mobility Action Council), infrastructure (the Infrastructure Action Council, to be launched in early 2025), and building healthy places (the Building Healthy Places Action Council, which leads ULI Nashvilles work on sustainability and resilience). Each Action Council has co-chairs that work closely with the Strategic Initiatives Lead. Action Council co-chairs often establish subcommittees to achieve their workplans.

Strengthening/Promoting Work Between Public and Private Sector Members and Partners The Strategic Initiatives Lead will be the lead staff to ULI Nashvilles Civic Leadership Forum and in ULI Nashvilles forthcoming work in strengthening relationships in Middle Tennessee (outside of Davidson County). The Civic Leadership Forum has co-chairs that work closely with the Strategic Initiatives Lead to accomplish the workplan. Meanwhile the Strategic Initiatives Lead will work with the Executive Director, ULI Nashville staff and Advisory Board to determine the plan for deeper engagement in Middle Tennessee. This is not anticipated to begin until early 2025.
The Strategic Initiatives Lead works with the members of the Civic Leadership Forum (and in the future with volunteers charged to work on Middle Tennessee impact) to engage them in planning for programs.

Technical Assistance Panels (TAPs) and Advisory Services Panels (ASPs)* The Strategic Initiatives Lead will be the lead staff in in ULI Nashvilles work in TAPs and ASPs, where ULI Nashville convenes panelists locally or from across the U.S. to address the problem statement (policy or geography-based) offered by a client/sponsor. The panelists come to Nashville for a three-day session to hear from numerous stakeholders before forming recommendations for the client/sponsor and presenting these to the client/sponsor and publicly. The Strategic Initiatives Lead will work with the Executive Director and key ULI Nashville member leaders to determine which TAPs and/or ASPs will be included in the workplan and to secure the client/sponsor. The Strategic Initiatives Lead will work with the Executive Director and the client/sponsor to structure the big question of the TAP/ASP and secure panelists and all the logistics for the TAP/ASP.
