SENIOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

FlexRack by Qcells is an integrated solar company that offers custom-designed, fixed tilt ground mount and single-axis solar tracking systems in the commercial and utility-scale solar mounting industries. Solar FlexRack also offers full services, including engineering, geotechnical, pullout testing, field, and layout design services to address the actual site conditions of a project site. FlexRack has completed over 3.5 GW of solar racking installations in over 40 U.S. states, 9 Canadian provinces and across the globe.
SUMMARY
We are currently seeking a Senior Research and Development Engineer to work with our cross-functional business units to design and implement solar energy collection systems.
This position reports to the Senior Manager of R&D, or another management personnel that the President of the Company may designate. This position is expected to travel up to 10%.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work as part of the R&D team developing new concepts and products
- Develop 2D & 3D models for concept validation and analysis
- Hands-on testing of prototype products for functionality, ease-of-use, and longevity
- Create detailed product design and fabrication drawings
- Create product testing requirements to validate design and longevity
- Assist with the creation of product installation and O&M manuals
- Develop and manage product FMEA and DFMEA
- Work directly with NREL’s for product certification
- Ensure that products meet industry standards and code requirements
- Redesigning existing products to enhance functionality or reduce costs
- Work with R&D and Engineering teams to resolve product issues
- Work as part of a cross-functional team with multiple departments on product related tasks.
- Meeting with business management, marketing, and the R&D team to discuss product requirements
- Presenting product designs to management and stakeholders
- Conducting market research and evaluating similar products and their functions
- Regular attendance, in accordance with the company’s attendance policy and supervisory assignment, is an essential job duty requirement for this position.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, civil/structural engineering, or relevant field.
- 3-6 years’ experience in engineering or as an R&D engineer.
- Advanced analytical and mathematical skills.
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical, structural, and/or electrical engineering.
- Solar industry experience and design experience preferred.
- Proficient with computer design software including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, RISA 3D or other FEA Software (Ansys, AutoCAD Inventor).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Working knowledge of wind tunnel analysis and studies and design codes including AISC, ASCE, AISI is preferred.
- Experience using CFD software is a plus
- Experience with design of engineered plastic components is a plus
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Stationary Position: frequently remains stationary up to 90% of the time and sitting up to 8 hours in a day
- Move/Traverse: infrequently bend, stand, stoop and/or walk
- Carry Weight: infrequently carry weight and/or lift objects (light to heavy) weighing up to 50 pounds
- Hearing and Speech: frequently communicates with the ability to hear and talk on a regular basis with employees, coworkers, and all personnel matters; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
- Sight: frequent use of sight to detect images on computer, office documents, and office objects near and far
- Climb: occasionally ascends/descends on stairway to get to office upper and lower floors
- Travel: up to 10% as needed
