Sr. Power System Coordinator – (Transmission System Operator)

JOB SUMMARY:

The System Operator (SO) is responsible for ensuring Safe, reliable, and secure transmission operations for Georgia Power and the Georgia ITS. The SO performs state-wide power flow monitoring and contingency analysis in real-time to identify emerging issues, develop operating strategies, and execute system adjustments to mitigate reliability risks. The SO, in coordination with the SBA Reliability Coordinator (RC), identifies and implements efficient Reliability Must Run units and generation redispatch as needed to maintain reliability and system stability. The SO coordinates the interface with generating facilities including writing and implementing switching and clearances and monitors Nuclear Plant Interconnection Requirements to ensure reliable off-site power. The SO also monitors and coordinates the interface with neighboring utilities and develops and adjusts hydro schedules.

The SO, in coordination with TCC supervision, provides operational leadership to the floor and ensures a continuous leadership presence on nights and weekends. The SO, in coordination with the SBA RC, leads the Georgia ITS response to system events including Energy Emergency Alerts, load shed, Blackstart, restoration activities and other system emergencies.

The successful candidates will gain extensive knowledge of the power system and power flow monitoring/contingency analysis tools and techniques. The successful candidates will gain extensive knowledge of NERC requirements related to Transmission Operations and will build strong working relationships throughout Power Delivery, Generation, the Southern Balancing Area, and other cross-functional areas, as well as with the Georgia ITS. The successful candidates will develop a state-wide and regional perspective of transmission operations and gain leadership experience in coordinating reliable operations. The successful candidates will develop excellent teamwork, problem solving, decision making, and communication skills working with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Specify major duties performed by the job and % of time spent on duties.

Ensure Safe, reliable, secure transmission operations for Georgia Power and the Georgia ITS in real-time (70%)

  • Proactively monitor and adjust the system to maintain reliability (Contingency Loading, Stability, Voltage)
  • Monitor operating (real and reactive) reserves to maintain grid resiliency.
  • Coordinate Safe and timely restoration of the system for routine and major events.
  • Support efficient generation dispatch to minimize curtailments and redispatch.
  • Manage power flows and contingencies to enable clearances (WRs) to proceed in support of successful maintenance/construction projects.
  • Coordinate the interfaces with generating facilities and neighboring utilities.
  • Maintain NPIRs (offsite power) and lead notifications/communications for nuclear units (Hatch and Vogtle)

Provide leadership in daily floor operations (20%)

  • Lead the Georgia ITS response to system events including major storms, Energy Emergency Alerts, load shed, Blackstart, restoration activities and other system emergencies.
  • Lead communication requirements and notifications to TCC Mgt, PCC, DCCs, PSOC, TMCs, ITS, SNC, etc.
  • Set a positive tone and build trusting, inclusive teams across TCC work groups and with stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership in Operational Readiness (expertise in TCC guidelines & training, system drills, restoration strategy, redispatch strategy, voltage control strategy, etc.)

Provide hydro scheduling and stakeholder coordination activities for Georgia (10%)

  • Maintain weekly hydro schedules. Coordinate special events and mitigate extreme event flood risks.
  • Coordinate with Plants, FERC, NGOs, POAs, and other stakeholders related to Hydro operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )

Education & Experience

  • Considerable experience as a NERC certified Transmission Operator or RC at GPC or Southern
  • A college degree is not required but may be beneficial due to the technical requirements of the role [Electrical Engineering or other relevant training with focus on power and power flow analysis]
  • Experience in Power Generation or other areas of Power Delivery a plus
  • Experience with GPC operating tools such as STOMP, EMS, TransMap, GPC storm and system alert practices, Georgia ITS processes and procedures, Redbook, and Section 0

Knowledge, Skills, & Behavioral Attributes

  • Knowledge of power system analysis, T&D switching and clearance practices, NERC requirements applicable to Operations, construction and maintenance practices related to clearances.

Other Requirements

  • 24×7 rotating shift – 12-hour shifts include days, nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Required to work outside normal shift hours during call outs, emergencies, and severe weather events.
  • Must reside within commutable distance of Lithia Springs, GA. Relocation assistance will be considered depending on circumstances.
  • Indoor control center environment includes sitting or standing at a workstation for long periods of time.
  • Must complete structured in-house training along with On-the-Job training and achieve shift readiness.
  • Must maintain annual NERC CEH training requirements.
  • Must meet all physical and cyber security requirements including participation in the Insider Threat Program.
  • Must observe Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Standards of Conduct and Separation Protocol.
