The Role

The Solar Network Engineer will be responsible for leading a team of engineers and technicians to design and operate communications system for utility scale Solar PV and Battery Energy System projects. This position will work closely with electrical engineers, designers, development team, construction team and other disciplines.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The solar network engineer is anticipated to have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Help the engineering team create a redundant communications system composed of fiber, ethernet, basic comms and propriety hardware specific to solar operations
  • Create a typical specification standard to unify network components for Energix portfolio
  • Maintain a database of IP addresses, security access information, and backup files for equipment deployed on sites
  • Update MET station, network, and inverter software when replacements or upgrades are made
  • Maintain the firewall for each project. Provide VPN access to subcontractors to work on specific pieces of equipment on site
  • Manage subcontractors responsible for maintaining connection to market operator and PJM
  • Diagnose and solve network issues on sites
  • Coordinate owner requirements with SCADA provider, control room, market operator and other stakeholders required to operate each site.
  • Manage a spare parts inventory for sites.
  • Aid team in maintaining security risk matrix for the portfolio

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Technical Skill and Expertise

• Experienced designing and maintaining networks

• Experience in programming solar specific equipment and network switches

• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

• Experience working on utility scale solar sites

Soft Skills

• Team player that builds effective internal and external relationships.

• Quick learning from previous designs and a critical eye when implementing new designs.

• Strong verbal and written communication.

• Thrives in a highly ambiguous, fast-paced, and changing environment.

Education, Training & Certificates

• Bachelor’s degree in computer/network engineering or similar major

• 4+ years of network engineering & technician experience

• Must be able to work legally in the US for any employer without sponsorship.

This position will be based in the Roanoke, Virginia office.

Limited travel in Virginia or the mid-Atlantic region
