Primary Purpose

Functions as the company’s expert in petroleum engineering. Provides technical support within the Gas Storage Operations and Reservoir Integrity and Engineering organizations for operation, maintenance, integrity verification and capital improvements.

Primary focus is to evaluate gas storage well operation and look for abnormal or anomalous conditions; with adherence to SoCalGas standards and API best practices, cost estimation, field work supervision, and regulatory compliance assurance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • At the assigned field:
  • Evaluates gas storage, water injection, observation and oil well operation and identifies abnormal or anomalous conditions. Utilizes continuous wellhead pressure data generation from PI Vision.
  • Assists in the design and generation of programs for workovers, abandonments, and completions.
  • Provides assigned field Gas Storage Specialist with work direction and adherence to gas standards for all well operations.
  • Delivers onsite support and supervision during critical jobs. Manages well work records documentation utilizing WellView and CalGEMs WellSTAR.
  • Initiates well performance and sand erosion testing as required to maximize deliverability.
  • Develops deliverability curves used to determine well/field expected performance for gas supply forecasting.
  • Prepares and submits notifications and results of MIT surveys and safety system tests to California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) WellSTAR.
  • Manages the idle well inventory and compliance requirements in their assigned field.
  • Travels to their designated storage fields as required and for Company hybrid workplace reporting policy.
  • Must assure compliance with CCR Title 14 Regulations relating to Gas Storage and Underground Injection Control projects.
  • Ensures compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations and guidelines. Promotes safety awareness and environmental consciousness. Prepares Capital/Expense initial cost estimates and reauthorizations for over expenditures. Reviews vendor field costs for accuracy and authenticity and approves associated invoices. Performs technical well work lessons learned, as well as perform financial post audits.
  • Provides technical expertise within the department and Company. Provides technical mentorship to junior staff members and reviews technical results, evaluations, and analyses.
  • Stays abreast of the latest changes, trends and technological advancements in the industry through attendance at conferences and seminars, continuing education, literature, etc. Educate SCG management on latest trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

$122500 – $183800 / year

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering or other technical discipline required.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or other technical discipline preferred.

Experience

  • 10 years of related engineering experience required.
  • 5 years of oil & gas operations or equivalent (included in overall experience) required.
  • 3 years of downhole workover operations (included in overall experience) preferred.
  • Rig supervision experience preferred.
  • Drilling experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Petroleum Engineering principles, including fluid mechanics, petroleum geology and reservoir science relating to underground gas storage. Gas Storage well and wellhead design.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement well control measures and associated engineering steps and calculations.

Working and process knowledge of petroleum software and good computer skills.

  • Ability to make judgments on details of work and making preliminary selections and adaptations of risk/economic alternatives and principles.
  • Ability to act with a high degree of independence.
  • Knowledge of project management theories and concepts, engineering practices and concepts, and cost analysis, and be able to apply this knowledge in daily operations.
  • Technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve conflicts in schedules, or the relationship of interdependent functions such as cost, schedule and quality parameters.
  • Ability to review complex problems and propose innovative solutions, which involve technical, economic an strategic issues, and may link new concepts and technologies.
  • Ability to prepare and review complex petroleum engineering calculations and analyses.
  • Ability to assess the potential financial impact of a project on the Company, as well as the impact on existing Company facilities and operating, marketing, and regulatory philosophies and procedures.
  • Leadership skills and demonstrate good management practices.

Other Qualifications

  • Valid California Drivers License or reliable transportation required.
  • Valid Well Control Certification preferred.
  • Registration as a professional engineer in the state of California preferred.
