About You and This Role:

The Dow Industrial Solutions has an immediate opening for a Senior R&D Engineer Specialist in the Energy Platform, aligned to the Refining and Processing application segment.

The selected candidate will join a high performing R&D team of engineers collaborating on Refining & Processing and Pre-Combustion innovation. The role will involve developing process packages by leveraging established engineering & modeling practices. The selected candidate will require understanding of key business drivers in adequation of gases to reduce/ eliminate sulfur and carbon emissions and engage with a broad customer base to support sustainability strategic objectives for contributing towards a net-zero economy.   • Traditional Energy with focus on Exploration & Production, Refining & Processing, Energy & Heat Management, and Fuel Markers.
  • Energy Transition with focus on Pre- and Post-Combustion, Enhanced Oil Recovery, and Data Center Cooling/ Energy storage cooling.

The Industrial Solutions Energy Platform is a highly profitable, fast growing, market facing segment that combines customized chemistries, engineering solutions & technologies with R&D capabilities to improve the performance of upstream and downstream processes. The downstream segment, Refining and Gas Processing (R&P), leads the industry in acid gas removal and energy efficiency solutions for natural gas, refinery gas, hydrocarbon liquids and synthesis gas applications. Our extensive and proven product lines include UCARSOL™, SELEXOL™, SulFerox™, NORKOOL™, DESITHERM™, AMBITROL™, UCARTHERM™, SYLTHERM™, and DOWTHERM™.

The position is based in Lake Jackson, Texas (US). The work of this team will be implemented in the 5 global regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, Middle East / Africa, and Asia Pacific.

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead R&D projects for refining and natural gas processing applications by developing subject matter expertise in gas treating process simulation, working with established proprietary (ProComp) and commercial (Aspen, ProMax, ProTreat) simulator platforms.
  • Partners with a team of gas treating design subject matter experts to provide quick response to customer design inquiries and serve a customer base comprising Front End Engineering and Design (FEED), Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC), and operating companies.
  • Applies expanded conceptual and practical knowledge of established engineering practice, process simulation, empirical design guidelines, and plant operating data to current and prospective customers of Dow’s gas treating solvents.
  • Develop subject matter expertise in Dow acid gas removal offerings (UCARSOL™, SELEXOL™) and customer applications (ammonia, hydrogen, natural gas, refinery gas, syn gas, etc.).
  • Interface with the DIS business development organization responsible for developing solvent sales contracts based on the technical team’s gas treating process design packages.
  • Partner and hand-over design packages to Field Application technical service team on the implementation phase of projects.
  • Provide expert consultation to customers and represent R&P externally in the gas treating industrial community.
  • Document learnings (case studies, design methodologies) in internal and external publications and presentations.
  • Undertake Dow safety training and comply with all safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree or higher in Chemical Engineering
  • A minimum of 3 years of industrial experience (5+ years preferred).
  • Alternative bachelors or higher technical degrees will be considered if sufficient fundamentals and experience in thermodynamics and process modeling are present.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong understanding of vapor-liquid equilibrium, heat and mass transfer, and process separations.
  • Chemical process modeling experience with Aspen and with rate-based gas treating simulators.
  • Experience in the gas processing industry or in plant engineering/operations.
  • Developed and proven communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interface effectively with multiple stakeholders across different functions (Research & Development, Technical Sales & Development, Commercial and Marketing).
  • Deep technical focus coupled with leadership attributes. Ability to lead by influence.
  • Willingness to travel for site evaluations, as required by project needs.
  • Self-motivated, high initiative, and good time-management skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills and organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and have a sense of prioritization based on value and efficiency.
