ESS is a globally recognized leader in sustainable energy storage and is consistently identified as one of the most innovative and exciting technology players in energy storage. Trading on the NYSE (GWH), it is poised to be one of the fastest growing energy technology companies in the world, with projects already across 4 continents. The ESS vision is about enabling the decarbonization of the grid by enabling us to achieve up to 100% of our electricity from clean, sustainable renewable energy.

These are ambitious goals, and we are pursuing them with passion. At ESS, we are leading the energy transition, creating the sustainable energy solutions of the future to help individuals, businesses and communities change energy into lasting value.

We are currently hiring for a Senior Manager of Grid Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), who will lead and manage all aspects of engineering, procurement, and construction activities for grid-connected energy storage projects, with a specific focus on battery-attached systems. This role requires a deep understanding of civil engineering, electrical grid infrastructure, code compliance, and power distribution. The Director will ensure that projects are designed, executed, and delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Leadership: Oversee the end-to-end EPC process for battery-attached energy storage systems, including site assessment, design, procurement, and construction.
  • Engineering Oversight: Lead the civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure the integration of energy storage systems into grid infrastructure. Review and approve engineering designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure that all projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including building codes, electrical codes, and safety standards. Stay current with changes in industry standards and regulations affecting grid-attached storage systems.
  • Procurement Management: Develop and manage procurement strategies for equipment, materials, and services. Negotiate contracts with suppliers and contractors, ensuring cost-effectiveness and adherence to quality standards.
  • Construction Management: Direct the construction process, ensuring that projects are built according to specifications, on schedule, and within budget. Oversee contractors and subcontractors, manage site activities, and resolve any issues that arise during construction.
  • Power Distribution: Ensure the proper integration of energy storage systems with grid power distribution networks. Collaborate with utilities, independent system operators (ISOs), and other stakeholders to optimize system performance.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with EPC projects, including technical, financial, and regulatory risks. Develop contingency plans and ensure that all safety protocols are followed.
  • Budget and Financial Management: Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring cost control and financial accountability. Provide regular reports on project financials, schedules, and progress to senior management.
  • Team Development: Build and lead a high-performing team of engineers, project managers, and support staff. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, regulators, and other stakeholders. Build and maintain strong relationships to support project success.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, procurement, and construction, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Experience with grid-connected energy storage systems is highly desirable.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of civil engineering, electrical grid infrastructure, battery storage systems, power distribution, and code compliance.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage large-scale projects. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. PMP or other project management certification is a plus.
