Consulting Services at GE Vernova is a team that has comprehensive global experience in power system studies including in-depth experience in analyzing shunt and series compensations, application of SVCs, FACTS, HVDC, synchronous condensers, and power plant and transmission system dynamic controls. Our global team has more than 500 person-years of professional experience with leading power system simulation and analysis software tools like Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) software and Multi-Area Production Simulation (MAPS) software, as well as PSS/E, PowerFactory, PSCAD, EMTP, ASPEN, ETAP, other commercial applications, and many specialized in-house tools. Our team also has deep experience with voltage control and reactive planning issues as well as the tools and procedures that are most effective in studying them. We perform detailed steady state, voltage and transient stability studies of regional transmission systems, generation interconnections, and renewable generation impacts, as well as specialized studies of sub-synchronous resonance and torsional interaction.

Job Description

Role Summary /Purpose
As a member of the Consulting Services Grid Integration and Stability (GIS) practice area , the selected candidate will be an active contributor to the GE Vernova business initiatives related to power systems and power electronics equipment and services to support energy transition.
This position is eligible for remote work within the United States.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform power system transient studies, and detailed equipment modeling using appropriate software tools
  • Evaluate grid code compliance standards and their impact on renewable energy projects in bulk power systems
  • Support development of transmission and distribution connected IBR and distributed energy resource (DER) products for evolving codes and standards through participation in industry standards groups
  • Perform technical analysis related to power electronic and power systems control of renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, large industrial drives and FACTS.
  • Create, modify and parametrize simulation models representing GE Vernova inverter-based resource (IBR) products like wind turbines, solar and battery storage
  • Support customers with power systems engineering expertise; including modeling, analysis, equipment design and specification, and failure mode analysis
  • Effectively communicate results to both internal and external customers by preparing detailed written reports and presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions
  • Enhance industry knowledge and present technical content in regional forums and conferences; serve as a thought leader in industry activities
  • Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, customer service and innovation are important

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering or electric power engineering
  • Minimum ten ( 10) years of experience performing transient analysis using simulation tools like PSCAD/EMTDC and EMTP
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience with the use and application of common programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, FORTRAN )
  • Strong background in power system analysis
  • Solid understanding of inverter-based resources (control system) design and application considerations

Eligibility Requirements

  • Willingness to travel for supporting project work, meeting team members, attending industry standard working group meetings and conferences (up to 10%)

Desired Characteristics

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g. ability to effectively communicate with all levels of GE Vernova and customer/plant staff)
  • Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, electric power engineering, or related field of study – five years of experience will be adequate with this qualification instead of ten years with Master’s degree
  • Advanced experience in electromagnetic transient simulation tools like P SCAD/EMTDC , EMTP (e.g. FORTRAN programming for developing user-written models in PSCAD ( “black box” models) and in EMTP , use of Python/MATLAB scripting to automate execution and analysis of multiple simulations)
  • Experience with steady state and dynamic analysis using large data base simulation tools like PSS/E, PowerFactory, PSLF and use of programming languages like C and C++ is a plus
  • Experience in creating and modifying dynamic user models in simulation tools like PSS/E, PowerFactory and PSLF is a plus
  • Demonstrated application of complex mathematics and engineering to real-world electric power system problems
  • Industry reputation, prior IEEE/CIGRE published articles related to practical power systems engineering topics, participation in industry standards working groups
