Job Description

Work with an interdisciplinary fuel chemistry and engineering team to assist with the development of future projects, experimental plans, and protocols for rapid decarbonization of difficult-to-electrify energy sectors with a focus on aviation fuel. The successful candidate will assist with developing funding opportunities and partnerships both within NREL and with key industry stakeholders. The incumbent will assist senior scientists with the development of complex analytical techniques for fundamental fuel chemistry studies. Experience with GCxGC-TOF-MS and the large datasets generated by this method is required.

Effectively communicate and interact with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers across directorates, as well as outside of NREL. Obtain necessary input data for simulations and provide meaningful interpretation of analytical results to guide experiments, operations, and engineering designs.

Disseminate knowledge through publications in technical journals and presentations at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations.

Work with management, senior staff, and industry stakeholders to plan and design future potential projects, determine technical objectives, and interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Possesses mid-level scientist knowledge of chemistry, particularly in analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Ability to develop and validate analytical characterization tools for sustainable fuel alternatives, including detailed speciation of alternative fuel candidates, and assessment of their fit-for-purpose properties.
  • Experience in sustainable fuel characterization (especially aviation), standards, and end-use.
  • Familiar with the areas of sustainable alternative fuels.
  • Able to assist senior staff with research & development, contributing to leading projects and publication of high-impact papers/reports/patents.
  • Possesses effective communication skills- consistently communicating research results with clients, external agencies, governmental senior-level management and general audience.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 – $143,300
