Job Purpose

The Renewable Energy Development Associate will be responsible for supporting the Director of Development on the development of solar, wind, and storage projects with a focus on the northeast US. Activities will include supporting prospecting for new wind/solar/storage sites and performing due diligence to support project acquisitions; negotiating land agreements; supporting the acquisition of local, state and federal permits and approvals; completing local and state tax agreements; supporting real estate survey and title work; and performing other development work to support project financing. The position requires working extensively with internal subject matter experts to support origination, legal, interconnection, solar/wind resources, engineering, environmental and permitting, construction planning, government affairs/ community outreach, and finance activities throughout the development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Development and subject matter experts to develop and advance solar, wind, and storage projects in the northeast US.
  • Support the Director of Development in managing all aspects of project development to ensure critical milestones are met, including maintaining project development budgets, schedule, key activity tracking, and risk register.
  • Manage internal subject matter experts, consultants, landowners, and interact with utilities, policy makers, and other external parties to ensure that project timelines are met.
  • Research and identify potential project sites and assess land ownership, proximity to transmission, title issues, and environmental/permitting/community/ construction feasibility.
  • Negotiate real estate agreements with landowners; establish a positive, long-term relationship with host communities.
  • Coordinate with internal Longroad subject matter experts, including:
  • Environmental and Permitting team – to secure local, state, and federal permits.
  • Interconnection team to evaluate potential project interconnection locations, and track progress, costs, and risks of interconnection studies.
  • Finance team – to provide inputs and sensitivities for the financial project model.
  • Engineering and construction team to assist in project design, engineering, scoping, drawings, contracting, budgeting, and management.
  • Legal team to negotiate and execute leases, contracts, and other agreements.
  • Origination team to support analyzing project revenue, developing revenue plans and submissions to corporate, utilities and municipal requests for proposals.
  • Prepare project presentation and public information materials.
  • Compile and organize data for presentation to Longroads investment committee to assess development risk versus spending at various stages of the projects life.
  • Manage project document control.
  • Manage consultant master service agreements, purchase orders, and processing of invoices
  • Continue to support the project pipeline and manage multiple projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 years managing projects in a planning, environmental, construction, or engineering capacity. Projects should be in power generation, utilities, or commercial real estate development.
  • College degree and subject matter expertise in a business function directly related to infrastructure development.
  • Demonstrated financial analysis and budgeting skills, project management skills, and policy analysis experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to create forms, letters, spreadsheets, presentations, and schedules. Proficient in performing internet-based research.
  • Self-motivated and organized with ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Must be able to walk over undeveloped land unassisted, travel unassisted, and sit at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Travel as required in support of the position responsibilities, including occasional evenings and weekends to attend meetings and community events.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience developing renewable energy projects in the Eastern US transmission territory, including familiarity with state-specific regulatory processes and utilities.
  • Experience with leading or managing others.
