Summary This role is responsible for the performance and reliability of plant utility systems and equipment at the Marlborough manufacturing plant. The Senior Plant Engineer will be the in-house engineering expertise that ensures plant utilities systems are designed, installed and maintained in compliance with the latest regulations while meeting safety, quality, productivity, operability, and reliability drivers.

The Senior Plant Engineer will provide day to day operational support and troubleshooting of plant utility systems in close coordination with Facilities, Manufacturing, Technology and Quality. The primary focus of the position is on GMP/clean utilities (WFI, Process Gasses, and HVAC systems), but will also include support to non-GMP/plant utilities (Plant Steam, Chilled Water, Hot Water, Electrical, and Waste Treatment).

This is an exciting opportunity to be a key technical contributor to the start-up of a new GMP manufacturing facility and to participate in the build out of the operational capabilities of the site. The position will be located at the clients new facility being built in Marlborough, MA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily plant operations and ensure facility and utility systems remain operational by providing engineering support for GMP/clean utilities (WFI, Process Gasses, and HVAC systems), as well as non-GMP/plant utilities (Plant Steam, Chilled Water, Hot Water, Electrical, and Waste Treatment).
  • Troubleshoot complex utility equipment problems and provide optimization strategies and improvements for utility systems.
  • Lead root cause analysis for equipment failures and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to determine the best path forward to identified issues by balancing technical, compliance, and business objectives.
  • Work with Facilities team providing input to preventative maintenance plans, spare part inventory, CMMS data to achieve consistent and reliable high performing equipment.
  • Proactively evaluate the safety of the operation of the utility and HVAC equipment and propose and implement safety improvements.
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support assigned work orders and Quality Systems. Support deviation investigations, root cause analysis, and CAPA identification and implementation for facility and utility systems.
  • Serve as Engineering SME for Change Control process for utility and facility changes, may own and manage change controls.
  • Participate as SME on cross-functional project teams during utility equipment design, selection, construction, start-up, commissioning and qualification. Ensure that a consistent network technical approach for Engineering is used across projects at the site.
  • Develop and execute engineering tests, FATs, SATs and commissioning test plans.
  • Support validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ) and exceptions encountered during execution.
  • Provide supplemental support to the process equipment and quality control lab equipment (bioreactors, chromatography skids, filtration skids mix equipment, autoclaves, washers, environmental chambers and analytical equipment) as needed.

Skills & Qualifications

  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or related engineering degree.
  • 8+ years of experience in engineering and/or facilities operations in GMP environment

Other Ideal Personal Characteristics

  • Expertise in GMP/clean utility systems (WFI, cleanroom HVAC, process gas generation/storage and distribution systems).
  • Experience with non-GMP/plant utilities (Plant Steam, Chilled Water, Hot Water, Electrical, UPS, Back-up Generators and Waste Treatment).
  • Experience with engineering systems in a GMP environment, including, but not limited to work orders, calibration, lifecycle management, validation and change control.
  • General knowledge of typical GMP process equipment (bioreactors, chromatography skids, filtration skids mix equipment, autoclaves and washers).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, solve problems, synthesize data, summarize outcomes and provide recommendations on a compliant path forward.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully execute responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, collaborating across corporate functions and multiple stakeholders.
  • Project management experience and skills a plus.
  • Previous experience with new facility projects and new utility system startups a plus.
